1. An anchoring system for an indwelling medical article comprising:

  • a retainer including a base having an overall length in a longitudinal direction that is substantially parallel to an axis of the portion of the medical article being retained and a compressible member, the base having first and second sides, which are spaced apart in the longitudinal direction, and a cavity located between the first and second sides, and the compressible member being disposed within the cavity, the compressible member defining a receptacle configured to receive at least a portion of the medical article, at least a deformable portion of the compressible member being deformable in a manner producing compressive stresses within the compressible member that bear against the portion of the medical article when received within the receptacle, wherein the compressible member has a length in the longitudinal direction that generally matches the overall length of the base such that the medical article extends beyond the first and second sides of the base when the medical article is placed within the retainer, whereby the retainer does not cover an insertion site of the medical article.
