Abstract

An optical transport switching system having an all-optical switch that can be selectively configured to provide cross-connection and add/drop multiplexing functions. Optical circuit cards are provided in a chassis/bay, and connected by an optical backplane. The circuit cards may include access line interface cards, optical access ingress cards, transport ingress cards, transport egress cards, and optical access egress cards. An optical switching fabric provides selective optical coupling between the cards. The all-optical switch can be used in an optical network that allows external/access networks to access the optical network, including access networks that use Gigabit Ethernet or SONET signaling. Wavelength conversion is provided for non-compliant wavelengths of the access networks. A local area network enables control and monitoring of the cards by a local node manager.

Claims

1. An optical transport switching system for use in an optical network, comprising:

an optical access ingress subsystem which is adapted to receive an optical signal associated with an access network;

an optical access egress subsystem;

a transport ingress subsystem;

a transport egress subsystem; and

an optical switch subsystem which is adapted to ingress the optical signal into the optical network by optically coupling the optical access ingress subsystem to the transport egress subsystem and which is adapted to selectively provide optical coupling between the transport ingress subsystem and at least one of (1) the optical access egress subsystem, and (2) the transport egress subsystem.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem comprises an all-optical switch.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem comprises a micro-electro-mechanical switch.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem is configurable to provide add multiplexing by optically coupling a specified optical output of the optical access ingress subsystem with a specified optical input of the transport egress subsystem.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem is configurable to provide drop multiplexing by optically coupling a specified optical output of the transport ingress subsystem with a specified optical input of the optical access egress subsystem.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the transport ingress subsystem and transport egress subsystems each communicate via respective optical links with at least one respective remote node in the optical network.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem is adapted to optically couple a specified optical output of the transport ingress subsystem with at least one of;

(a) a specified optical input of the optical access egress subsystem, and (b) a specified optical input of the transport egress subsystem.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem is configurable to provide a wavelength cross-connect by optically coupling a specified optical output of the transport ingress subsystem with a specified optical input of the transport egress subsystem.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein;

the optical switch subsystem, when configured to provide the wavelength cross-connect, is adapted to route optical signals in the optical network according to a desired routing protocol.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical switch subsystem is adapted to optically couple a specified optical output of the optical access ingress subsystem with at least one of;

(a) a specified optical input of the optical access egress subsystem, and (b) a specified optical input of the transport egress subsystem.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the transport ingress subsystem receives an optical signal multiplex via at least one optical link of the optical network, and comprises a demultiplexer for demultiplexing the optical signal multiplex to provide a plurality of individual optical signals to be optically coupled by the optical switch subsystem.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein:

a plurality of individual optical signals are optically coupled to the transport egress subsystem by the optical switch subsystem, and the transport egress subsystem comprises a multiplexer for multiplexing the individual optical signals to provide an optical signal multiplex for transport via at least one optical link of the optical network.

13. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an access line interface subsystem for converting an optical signal of an access network that has a wavelength that is non-compliant with the optical network to an optical signal having a wavelength that is compliant with the optical network.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein:

the access line interface subsystem provides the optical signal having the compliant wavelength to the optical access ingress subsystem.

15. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an access line interface subsystem for converting an optical signal of the optical network that has a wavelength that is compliant with the optical network to an optical signal having a wavelength that is non-compliant with the optical network, but compliant with an access network associated with the optical network.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein:

the access line interface subsystem receives the optical signal having the compliant wavelength from the optical access egress subsystem.

17. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a node manager for selectively configuring the optical switch subsystem to provide at least one of an add/drop multiplexer and a wavelength cross-connect by controlling the optical coupling provided by the optical switch subsystem.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the transport ingress subsystem and transport egress subsystem provide optical inputs and outputs, respectively, of a node in the optical network.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the optical access ingress subsystem, optical access egress subsystem, transport ingress subsystem, and transport egress subsystem each comprise at least one respective optical circuit card.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein:

the cards are receivable in a common bay.

21. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the subsystems each comprise respective electrical connections for communicating with a common node manager via a local area network.

22. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the subsystems each comprise respective optical connections for communicating with an optical backplane.

23. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an optical performance monitoring subsystem for optically tapping into at least one of the optical access ingress subsystem, the optical access egress subsystem, the transport ingress subsystem, and the transport egress subsystem to obtain performance data therefrom.

24. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an optical signaling subsystem for at least one of;

(a) receiving signaling data through the transport ingress subsystem, and (b) transmitting signaling data through the transport egress subsystem.

25. An optical transport switching system for use in an optical network, comprising:

an optical access ingress subsystem;

an optical access egress subsystem which is adapted to direct the optical signal toward an access network;

a transport ingress subsystem;

a transport egress subsystem; and

the optical switch subsystem is adapted to egress an optical signal from the optical network by optically coupling the optical signal from the transport ingress subsystem to the optical access egress subsystem and is adapted to selectively provide optical coupling between the transport egress subsystem and at least one of (1) the optical access ingress subsystem and (2) the transport ingress subsystem.

26. An optical transport switching system for use in an optical network, comprising:

means for switching optical signals;

means for providing optical access ingress to the optical network;

means for providing optical access egress from the optical network;

means for providing transport ingress to the optical switching means; and

means for providing transport egress from the optical switching means;

wherein;

the switching means is adapted to ingress the optical signal into the optical network by optically coupling the means for providing optical access ingress to the means for providing transport egress and is adapted to selectively provide optical coupling between the means for providing transport ingress and one of (1) the means for providing optical access egress, and (2) the means for providing transport egress.

27. An optical transport switching system for use in an optical network, comprising:

a receiving apparatus having a plurality of respective receiving locations adapted to receive respective optical circuit cards with respective controllers, and a receiving location for receiving a central controller;

an optical backplane associated with the receiving apparatus for optically coupling to the optical circuit cards; and

a local area network for electrically coupling the central controller to the circuit card controllers to enable the central controller to control and monitor the optical circuit cards.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein:

the optical circuit cards include at least a transport ingress card, a transport egress card, and a switching fabric card for optically coupling the transport ingress card and the transport egress card.

29. The system of claim 27, wherein:

the optical backplane comprises optical fibers.

30. The system of claim 27, wherein:

the optical circuit cards are of a plurality of card types; and

at least some of the receiving locations are designated for receiving particular ones of the card types.
