Abstract

The present invention relates to a catheter pressure transducer having a pressure sensing module operable to provide a signal representative of pressure. The pressure sensor includes a sensing side and a pressure reference side. At least one signal transmission media is coupled to the sensor for transmitting the signal representative of pressure. A convex-shaped carrier is provided having a slot formed to expose the sensing side of the sensor. The convex-shaped carrier is adapted for receiving the sensor such that the sensing side of the sensor is adjacent the slot. A bonding material is provided for mounting the sensor to the carrier. The pressure sensing module provides ease of installation and manufacture because the module may easily be bonded and installed within a catheter.

Claims

1. A catheter pressure transducer for insertion into a living body, said catheter pressure transducer comprising:

a catheter body having an internal lumen and an opening formed through sidewalls of the catheter body for providing access to a reference pressure within the internal lumen;

a tube having an open channel and an opening formed through sidewalls of the tube for providing access to the open channel, wherein said tube is inserted within and extending along al least a portion of the internal lumen; and

a pressure sensor module comprising a carrier having a generally curved surface with an opening formed there through and a pressure sensor coupled to the carrier, wherein a sensing side of the pressure sensor is exposed to an external pressure through the opening formed within the carrier, and wherein the carrier is fitted within the opening formed through the catheter body and coupled at both ends to sidewall surfaces of the same opening.

2. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said tube is constructed of metal.

3. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said tube is constructed of ceramic.

4. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor module is coupled to the sidewall surfaces of the opening formed through said catheter body using epoxy resin.

5. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor module is coupled to the sidewall surfaces of the opening formed through said catheter body using flexible RTV silicone rubber.

6. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is selected from a group, comprising a resistive-type sensor, a capacitive-type sensor, a photoelectric-type sensor anti a strain-gauge type pressure sensor.

7. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, further comprising a first signal transmission media extending along the internal lumen of said catheter.

8. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 7, further comprising a second transmission media coupled to the pressure sensor for transmitting a signal representative of pressure, said second signal transmission media coupled to said first transmission media in order to transmit the signal representative of pressure.

9. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein the pressure sensor module is fitted within the opening formed through the catheter body, such that an outer surface of the pressure sensor module is substantially flush with an outer surface of the catheter body.

10. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of cardiac pressure.

11. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of intracranial pressure.

12. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of rectal pressure.

13. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of esophageal pressure.

14. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of gastrointestinal pressure.

15. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of blood pressure.

16. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of pressure in a urinary tract of said living body.

17. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 1, wherein the pressure sensor module is fitted within the opening formed through the catheter body, such that an inner surface of the pressure sensor module does not protrude into the open channel.

18. A catheter pressure transducer for insertion into a living body, said catheter pressure transducer comprising:

a catheter having a slot formed within sidewalls of the catheter, and

a pressure sensing module removably attached to said catheter and generally fitted into said slot, said pressure sensing module comprising;

(a) a carrier having a generally curved surface with an opening formed there through; and

(b) a sensor coupled to said carrier, such that one surface of said sensor is adjacent to the opining formed within the carrier surface, said sensor being operable to provide a signal representative of pressure within said living body; and

a tubular support member having an open channel and an opening formed within sidewalls of the tabular support member, wherein the opening formed within the tubular support member is in general alignment with the opening formed within the carrier surface.

19. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is selected from a group, comprising a resistive-type sensor, a capacitive-type sensor, a photoelectric-type sensor and a strain-gauge-type sensor.

20. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of blood pressure.

21. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of pressure in a urinary tract of said living body.

22. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, further comprising a signal transmission medium extending along an internal lumen of said catheter, wherein said signal transmission medium comprises one or more wires.

23. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein the one surface of said sensor is exposed to the pressure within the living body through the opening formed within the carrier surface mid wherein an opposite surf ace of said sensor is exposed to a reference pressure within the tubular support member through the opening formed therethrough.

24. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 23, wherein the opening formed within the carrier surface is configured for exposing only a sensing portion of the one surface of said sensor.

25. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of cardiac pressure.

26. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of intracranial pressure.

27. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of rectal pressure.

28. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of esophageal pressure.

29. The catheter pressure transducer of claim 18, wherein said sensor is operable to provide a signal that is representative of gastrointestinal pressure.

30. A method for manufacturing a catheter pressure transducer for determining pressure within a living body, said method comprising the steps of:

forming a slot within sidewalls of a catheter;

member extends along at least a portion of said lumen for reinforcing said catheter in a vicinity of said slot;

forming a pressure sensing module, by bonding a carrier to a sensor operable to provide a signal representative of pressure, said sensor having a sensing side and a reference side, wherein said sensing side is adjacent to an opening formed within a generally curved surface of said carrier;

coupling said sensor to said catheter via a signal transmission medium; and

removably attaching said pressure sensing module to said catheter by fitting said carrier within said slot, such that sidewall surfaces of said carrier abut against sidewall surfaces of said slot.

31. The method as claimed in claim 30, wherein said removably attaching comprises bonding the sidewall surfaces of said carrier to the sidewall surfaces of said slot with an adhesive sealant.

32. The method as claimed in claim 30, wherein an opening formed through sidewalls is of said tubular support member is configured for exposing said reference side to a reference pressure within said lumen of said catheter.

33. The method as claimed in claim 30, wherein said sensor is selected from a group, comprising a resistive-type sensor, a capacitive-type sensor, a photoelectric-type sensor and a strain-gauge-type sensor.

34. A catheter pressure transducer produced by the method of claim 30.

35. The method as claimed in claim 30, wherein said signal transmission medium comprises one or more wires.

36. The method as claimed m claim 30, wherein flexible RTV silicone rubber is used for bonding the carrier to the sensor.

37. The method as claimed in claim 30, wherein epoxy resin is used for bonding the carrier to the sensor.

38. The method as claimed in claim 30, wherein said reference side is exposed to a lumen of said catheter.

39. A method for determining pressure within a living body, said method comprising the steps of:

inserting a catheter pressure transducer into a living body, said catheter pressure transducer comprising;

(a) a catheter having a slot forted within sidewalls of the catheter; and

(b) a pressure sensing module removably attached to said catheter within said slot, said pressure sensing module comprising a curved carrier coupled to a sensor by using bonding material, said sensor being operable to provide a signal representative of pressure within said living body;

wherein said sensor is coupled to said catheter via at harsh one signal transmission medium; and

exposing said pressure sensing module to said living body by exposing only a portion of one surface of said sensor to a pressure external to the catheter through an opening formed within a surface of said curved carrier.

40. The method as claimed in claim 39, further comprising exposing an opposite surface of said sensor to an, reference pressure within a lumen of said catheter and comparing the external pressure to the reference pressure to determine the pressure within the living body.

41. The method as claimed in claim 39, further comprising the step of transmitting the signal representative of pressure to an external computing device.

42. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said pressure is in a urinary tract of said living body.

43. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said sensor is selected from a group, comprising a resistive-type sensor, a capacitive-type sensor, photoelectric-type sensor and a strain-gauge-type sensor.

44. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said pressure is esophageal pressure.

45. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said pressure is gastrointestinal pressure.

46. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said signal is representative of blood pressure.

47. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said pressure is cardiac pressure.

48. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said pressure is intracranial pressure.

49. The method as claimed in claim 39, wherein said pressure is rectal pressure.
