Abstract

A timely organized ad hoc network is provided. The network includes a media-independent communications link; a plurality of access points coupled to one another via the media-independent communications link; and a plurality of network nodes arranged in a self-assigned hierarchy and operable to transmit and receive at least one node information message destined for at least one of the access points; wherein at least one of the plurality of network nodes transmits the at least one node information message to a first selected one of at least one neighboring destination, the first selected neighboring destination being selected in accordance with a dynamic self-routing protocol, the first selected neighboring destination including one of: i) at least one of the access points, and ii) a first neighboring network node in a different level of the self-assigned hierarchy of network nodes, if the at least one network node is prevented from directly transmitting the node information message to at least one of the access points.

Claims

1. A network, comprising:

a media-independent communications link;

a plurality of access points coupled to one another via the media-independent communications link; and

a plurality of network nodes arranged in a self-assigned hierarchy and operable to transmit and receive at least one node information message destined for at least one of the access points;

wherein at least one of the plurality of network nodes transmits the at least one node information message to a first selected one of at least one neighboring destination, the first selected neighboring destination being selected in accordance with a dynamic self-routing protocol, the first selected neighboring destination including one of;

i) at least one of the access points, and

ii) a first neighboring network node in a different level of the self-assigned hierarchy of network nodes, if the at least one network node is prevented from directly transmitting the node information message to at least one of the access points.

2. The network according to claim 1, wherein the at least one network node is a source of at least a portion of the at least one node information message.

3. The network according to claim 2, wherein at least a portion of the at least one node information message is transmitted to the at least one network node by another one of the plurality of network nodes.

4. The network according to claim 3, wherein the at least one network node is operable to transmit and receive the at least one node information message wirelessly using a timely organized communication method.

5. The network according to claim 4, wherein the at least one network node is operable to transmit and receive the at least one node information message wirelessly using a TDMA communication method.

6. The network according to claim 4, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is operable to be assigned to one of a plurality of time slots of a time-slotted communications interval.

The network according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the access points is assigned one of a plurality of hierarchal levels, and each of the plurality of network nodes is operable to assign itself one of the plurality of hierarchal levels in accordance with a number of intervening transmissions required to ensure that the at least one node information message reaches at least one of the access points.

8. The network according to claim 7, wherein the hierarchal levels are chosen in accordance with the dynamic self routing protocol.

9. The network according to claim 8, wherein the respective hierarchal levels assigned to the access points are the same.

10. The network according to claim 8, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination in accordance with the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

11. The network according to claim 10, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination such that the hierarchal level assigned to the first selected neighboring destination is lower than the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one network node.

12. The network according to claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is further operable to transmit its assigned hierarchal level.

13. The network according to claim 12, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol receives the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination from a transmission of the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

14. The network according to claim 13, wherein the transmission of the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination is transmitted by the at least one neighboring destination.

15. The network according to claim 13, wherein the at least one network node is operable to package its hierarchal level and the at least one node information message into a data packet, the at least one network node being further operable to transmit the data packet.

16. The network according to claim 15, wherein the at least one network node transmits the data packet in accordance with the dynamic self-routing protocol.

17. The network according to claim 8, wherein at least one of the access points is operable to transmit at least one acknowledgment message destined for at least one source network node of the plurality of network nodes, the at least one source network node being a source of at least a portion of the at least one node information message.

18. The network according to claim 17, wherein the at least one source network node is configured to retransmit the at least one acknowledgment message.

19. The network according to claim 18, wherein the at least one source network node is configured to retransmit the at least one acknowledgment message at a lower power than a normal operation.

20. The network according to claim 17, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is operable to receive and transmit the at least one acknowledgment message.

21. The network according to claim 20, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first neighboring destination in accordance with at least one received message.

22. The network according to claim 21, wherein the at least one received message includes at least one of the acknowledgment message and a message transmitted by the first neighboring destination.

23. The network according to claim 21, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first neighboring destination in accordance with at least one of a power level and a Bit-Error Rate of the at least one received message.

24. The network according to claim 21, wherein the self-routing protocol selects the first neighboring destination in accordance a received power level of the at least one acknowledgment message.

25. The network according to claim 17, wherein the at least one network node is operable to transmit and receive the at least one node information message wirelessly using a timely organized communication method.

26. The network according to claim 21, wherein the at least one network node is operable to transmit and receive the at least one node information message wirelessly using a TDMA communication method.

27. The network according to claim 25, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is operable to be assigned to one of a plurality of time slots of a time-slotted communications interval.

28. The network according to claim 27, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is assigned to one of the plurality of time slots in accordance with the at least one acknowledgment message.

29. The network according to claim 17, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination in accordance with the at least one acknowledgment message.

30. The network according to claim 20, wherein the at least one network node transmits at least one information message to a second selected neighboring destination of the plurality of neighboring destinations, the second selected neighboring destination being selected by the dynamic self-routing protocol, the second neighboring destination including one of:

i) the at least one source network node, and

ii) a second neighboring network node of the plurality of network nodes.

31. The network according to claim 30, wherein the at least one information message includes at least one of the acknowledgment information message and a retransmitted broadcast message.

32. The network according to claim 31, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the second selected neighboring destination in accordance with the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

33. The network according to claim 32, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the second selected neighboring destination such that the hierarchal level assigned to the second selected neighboring destination is higher than the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one network node.

The network according to claim 33, wherein the at least one network node receives the at least one node information message from the second selected neighboring destination, so that the at least one acknowledgment message is transmitted to the at least one source network node using a same path used by the at least one source network node to transmit the at least one node information message to the at least one access point.

The network according to claim 1, wherein the media independent link includes at least one communications medium selected from the group consisting of a local area network, a wide area network, the Internet, an Intranet, an Ethernet network, a wireless network, an optical communication link, and a power-line communication network.

36. The network according to claim 1, further comprising a server coupled to the access points via the media-independent communications link.

37. The network according to claim 36, wherein at least one of the access points is operable to inform the remaining ones of the access points of each transmission and receipt of data over the media-independent communications link.

38. The network according to claim 37, wherein the access point operable to inform the remaining ones of the access points of each transmission and receipt of data is also operable to inform the server of each transmission and receipt of data.

39. The network according to claim 38, wherein the access point informs the server and remaining ones of the access points of each transmission and receipt of data by transmitting a copy of transmitted and received data, respectively, over the media-independent communications link.

40. The network according to claim 39, wherein at least one of the access points and the server are operable to determine a total number of network nodes arranged in the network in accordance with the data transmitted and received over the media-independent communications link.

72. The network according to claim 37, wherein the data includes synchronization timing information that permits the plurality of access points to synchronize with one another.

41. A network arrangement, comprising:

a plurality of networks, each network comprising;

at least one access point; and

a plurality of network nodes soft affiliated with the network and arranged in a self-assigned hierarchy and operable to transmit and receive at least one node information message destined for the at least one access point;

wherein at least one of the plurality of network nodes transmits the at least one node information message to a first selected one of at least one neighboring destination, the first selected neighboring destination being selected in accordance with a dynamic self-routing protocol, the first selected neighboring destination including one of;

i) the at least one access point, and

ii) a first neighboring network node in a different level of the self-assigned hierarchy of network nodes, if the at least one network node is prevented from directly transmitting the node information message to the at least one access point;

wherein each of the network nodes of each network is operable to affiliate itself with another one of the networks if at least one condition is met.

42. The network arrangement according to claim 41, wherein the at least one access point of each network is assigned one of a plurality of hierarchal levels, and each of the plurality of network nodes is operable to assign itself one of the plurality of hierarchal levels in accordance with a number of intervening transmissions required to ensure that the at least one node information message reaches the at least one access point.

43. The network arrangement according to claim 42, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination in accordance with the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

44. The network arrangement according to claim 43, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination such that the hierarchal level assigned to the first selected neighboring destination is lower than the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one network node.

45. The network arrangement according to claim 44, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is further operable to transmit its assigned hierarchal level.

46. The network arrangement according to claim 45, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol receives the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination from a transmission of the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

47. The network arrangement according to claim 46, wherein the transmission of the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination is transmitted by the at least one neighboring destination.

48. The network arrangement according to claim 46, wherein the at least one network node is operable to package its hierarchal level and the at least one node information message into a data packet, the at least one network node being further operable to transmit the data packet.

49. The network arrangement according to claim 48, wherein the at least one network node transmits the data packet in accordance with the dynamic self-routing protocol.

50. The network arrangement according to claim 42, wherein the at least one condition is met if the hierarchal level of the network node in the other network is lower than the hierarchal level of the network node in the affiliated network.

51. The network arrangement according to claim 42, wherein the at least one condition is met if a power level of received data in the other network is higher than a power level of received data in the affiliated network.

52. A network arrangement, comprising:

a plurality of networks, each network comprising;

at least one access point; and

a plurality of network nodes hard-affiliated with the network and arranged in a self-assigned hierarchy and operable to transmit and receive at least one node information message destined for the at least one access point;

wherein at least one of the plurality of network nodes transmits the at least one node information message to a first selected one of at least one neighboring destination, the first selected neighboring destination being selected in accordance with a dynamic self-routing protocol, the first selected neighboring destination including one of;

i) the at least one access point, and

ii) a first neighboring network node in a different level of the self-assigned hierarchy of network nodes, if the at least one network node is prevented from directly transmitting the node information message to the at least one access point.

53. The network arrangement according to claim 52, wherein the at least one access point of each network is assigned one of a plurality of hierarchal levels, and each of the plurality of network nodes is operable to assign itself one of the plurality of hierarchal levels in accordance with a number of intervening transmissions required to ensure that the at least one node information message reaches the at least one access point.

54. The network arrangement according to claim 53, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination in accordance with the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

55. The network arrangement according to claim 54, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol selects the first selected neighboring destination such that the hierarchal level assigned to the first selected neighboring destination is lower than the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one network node.

56. The network arrangement according to claim 55, wherein each of the plurality of network nodes is further operable to transmit its assigned hierarchal level.

57. The network arrangement according to claim 56, wherein the dynamic self-routing protocol receives the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination from a transmission of the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination.

58. The network arrangement according to claim 57, wherein the transmission of the hierarchal level assigned to the at least one neighboring destination is transmitted by the at least one neighboring destination.

59. The network arrangement according to claim 57, wherein the at least one network node is operable to package its hierarchal level and the at least one node information message into a data packet, the at least one network node being further operable to transmit the data packet.

60. The network arrangement according to claim 59, wherein the at least one network node transmits the data packet in accordance with the dynamic self-routing protocol.

61. A network, comprising:

a plurality of devices, including;

at least one access point; and

a plurality of network nodes arranged in a self-assigned hierarchy the plurality of network nodes and the at least one access point being operable to transmit and receive at least one data packet, each of the at least one data packet being destined for a respective ultimate destination;

wherein at least one of the network nodes and the at least one access point transmits the at least one data packet to a neighboring destination selected in accordance with a dynamic self-routing protocol, the neighboring destination including one of;

i) the ultimate destination, and

ii) a first network node in a next level of the self-assigned hierarchy of network nodes, if the at least one network node is prevented from directly transmitting the at least one data packet to the ultimate destination;

wherein at least one of the devices is operable to initiate different types of communication modes.

62. The network according to claim 61, wherein the types of communication modes include at least one of a standard communication mode, a Local Vicinity communication mode, a Global Command communication mode, a Direct Command communication mode, and an Alarm broadcast communication mode.

The network according to claim 61, wherein each of the different types of communication modes is assigned a unique type of broadcast data packet, and each of the devices is operable to initiate a particular one of the different types of communication modes by transmitting to the network nodes the type of broadcast data packet assigned to the particular one of the different types of communication modes.

64. The network according to claim 61, further comprising at least one device radio communicatively coupled to at least one of the network nodes.

65. The network according to claim 64, wherein the types of communication modes include at least one of a standard communication mode, a Local Vicinity communication mode, a Global Command communication mode, a Direct Command communication mode, and an Alarm broadcast communication mode.

The network according to claim 64, wherein each of the different types of communication modes is assigned a unique type of broadcast data packet, and each of the devices is operable to initiate a particular one of the different types of communication modes by transmitting to the network nodes the type of broadcast data packet assigned to the particular one of the different types of communication modes.

67. The network according to claim 64, wherein the ultimate destination includes the at least one device radio.

68. The network according to claim 63, wherein each type of broadcast data packet is received and retransmitted by the network nodes to help ensure that all of the network nodes in the network receive the broadcast data packet.

69. The network according to claim 61, wherein the at least one data packet includes at least one of:

i) at least one Broadcast Data Packet,

ii) at least one Command Data Packet, and

iii) at least one Network Data Packet.

70. The network according to claim 61, wherein the ultimate destination includes the at least one access point.

71. The network according to claim 61, wherein the ultimate destination includes at least one of the plurality of network nodes.

73. The network according to claim 68, wherein each type of broadcast data packet is received and retransmitted by the network nodes in random order.
