Abstract

A system and method is provided to view an anatomical structure such as a blood vessel in high contrast with its surrounding tissue. The system and method may be used to produce an image of an anatomical structure using reflected electromagnetic radiation singularly scattered from target tissue. The system and method may also provide same-side illumination and detection of reflected electromagnetic radiation in a convenient integral imaging device. The system and method may also provide helmet mounted imaging technology in a single integral helmet which allows the wearer to view an anatomical structure located within a patient such that the image is continuously oriented according to the orientation of the helmet wearer'"'"'s head. The system and method may also be used in the performance of venipuncture. The system and method may provide for improved contrast between any anatomical structure and its surrounding tissue for use in any imaging system.

Claims

1. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue with at least one monochromatic source within an infrared range;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element, wherein said enhancing step comprises enhancing with a digital processor filter; and

displaying said image on a monitor.

2. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of illuminating further comprises illuminating with a wavelength of between 700–

900 nm.

3. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a charge coupled device infrared camera.

4. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of detecting further comprises detecting said image with a video camera.

5. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a liquid crystal television detector.

6. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises eliminating light outside the wavelength of interest.

7. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing with at least one bandpass filter.

8. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 7 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing with at least one bandpass filter that passes wavelengths around 800 nm.

9. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing with at least one collimator.

10. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing with a first polarizing optical element in the path of an incident light between said a light source and said biological target tissue and a second polarizing optical element in the path of a directly reflected and singularly light between said biological tissue and an image detector.

11. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of illuminating further comprises illuminating with a modulation source and a light phase modulator connected to the modulation source.

12. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of illuminating further comprises illuminating with an illumination intensity modulation source.

13. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said steps of illuminating and detecting further comprises illuminating and detecting with a single integrated unit.

14. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 13 wherein said steps of illuminating and detecting with a single integrated unit further comprises illuminating and detecting with a helmet.

15. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 14 wherein said steps of illuminating and detecting with a single integrated unit further comprises illuminating and detecting with a helmet that contains a monitor.

16. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 14 wherein said steps of illuminating and detecting with a single integrated unit further comprises illuminating and detecting with a helmet that contains an infrared sensitive video camera and a diode laser.

17. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 14 wherein said steps of illuminating and detecting with a single integrated unit further comprises illuminating and detecting with a helmet that operates an automated piece of surgical equipment.

18. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of illuminating further comprises illuminating with at least two wavelengths and the step of detecting further comprises detecting with a digitizer connected to a frame grabber.

19. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of illuminating further comprises illuminating with at least two wavelengths and said step of displaying further comprises displaying by rapidly alternating a display at each respective wavelength.

20. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing with an exogenous dye absorbed within the biological tissue;

and said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a digitizer connected to a frame grabber.

21. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing with a monoclonal antibody attached to a target tissue;

and said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a digitizer connected to a frame grabber.

22. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of enhancing further comprises enhancing said image with a molecule collected on plaque within a blood vessel;

and said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a digitizer connected to a frame grabber.

23. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a liquid crystal television detector and said step of illuminating and detecting further comprises illuminating and detecting with synchronous phase modulation.

24. The method for imaging an anatomical structure as in claim 1 wherein said step of detecting further comprises detecting with a photorefractive crystal.

25. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image, wherein said enhancing step comprises polarizing incident light between a light source and said biological target tissue and polarizing reflected light between said biological target tissue and an image detector; and

displaying said image on a monitor.

26. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue, wherein said illuminating step comprises modulating a phase of illuminating light;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element; and

displaying said image on a monitor.

27. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue, wherein said illuminating step comprises modulating an intensity of illuminating light;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological tar get tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element; and

displaying said image on a monitor.

28. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element; and

displaying said image on a monitor;

wherein said illuminating and detecting steps are performed by a single integrated unit.

29. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue, wherein said illuminating step comprises illuminating with at least two wavelengths of light;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element; and

displaying said image on a monitor.

30. The method as claimed in claim 29 wherein said displaying step comprises displaying a first image at a first wavelength of light and a second image of a second wavelength of light in rapidly alternating relation.

31. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

injecting an dye for absorption within a biological target tissue illuminating said biological target tissue;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element; and

displaying said image on a monitor.

32. A method for imaging an anatomical structure comprising the steps of:

illuminating a biological target tissue with at least one with a polychromatic source;

detecting a directly reflected and singularly scattered image from said biological target tissue;

enhancing said image with a contrast enhancing element, wherein said enhancing step comprises enhancing with a digital processor filter; and

displaying said image on a monitor.
