1. A computed tomography (CT) scanner for scanning an object, the CT scanner comprising:
- a tunnel;
a conveyor for moving the object through the tunnel;
a gantry movable relative to the tunnel;
an x-ray source for providing an x-ray beam that intersects the tunnel;
a first set of detectors on the gantry, the detectors in the first set all being positioned substantially at a same first distance from the x-ray source, the first set of detectors being positioned opposite the x-ray source so that the gantry has first and second sections extending on opposite sides of the gantry between the x-ray source and the first set of detectors; and
a second set of detectors positioned on the first section of the gantry, the detectors in the second set all being positioned substantially at a same second distance from the x-ray source, the second distance being less than the first distance.

Abstract
A reduced size CT scanner for baggage inspection has a wide angle x-ray source and multiple sets of detectors at different distances from the x-ray source. The detectors in each set are sized and positioned to maintain consistent pitch and flux levels among all detectors. Conventional reconstruction processes can be used to process the data from the CT scanner. The scanner may also be incorporated into a check-in desk in a network of scanners.

5. An explosive detection system for screening airport passenger baggage, comprising:
a computed tomography (CT) scanner comprising; a gantry movable relative to a tunnel; a wide-angle x-ray source; and a folded detector array, the folded detector array comprising; a first plurality of adjacent detectors, each of the detectors in the first plurality positioned at substantially a first distance from the x-ray source, the first plurality of adjacent detectors being positioned opposite the x-ray source so that the gantry has first and second sections extending on opposite sides of the gantry between the x-ray source and the first plurality of adjacent detectors, and a second plurality of adjacent detectors positioned on the first section of the gantry, each of the detectors in the second plurality positioned at substantially a second distance from the x-ray source, the second distance being different from the first distance.
