A process and apparatus are disclosed for the generation of hydrogen from hydrogen rich compounds. The process uses hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer with a hydrogen rich compound forming a mixture such that when the mixture is exposed to a catalyst forming a hydrogen rich gas.

mixing an alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a decomposition catalyst at ambient pressure, wherein a gaseous product comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide is produced and the decomposition catalyst is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, Ba, La, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, Sn, and mixtures thereof; and passing the product gas over a reforming catalyst, wherein a product comprising hydrogen and carbon dioxide is produced and the reforming catalyst is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Cr, Au, Zn, Cu, Pt, Ag, Pd, Rh, Re, Os, Ru, Ir, and mixtures thereof. - View Dependent Claims (36, 37, 38)
