1. A device for controlling steering of a vehicle having a steering wheel, steered wheels, a power steering apparatus steering the steered wheels at a steering angle determined by rotating the steering wheel and generating steering assist torque under the control of the device, and at least one sensor monitoring a vehicle running condition;

  • the device comprising a portion of determining the steering assist torque in response to steering torque generated on the steering wheel;

    a portion of generating a value indicating understeer condition of the vehicle based upon a vehicle running condition monitored with the at least one sensor; and

    a portion of modifying the steering assist torque, which portion increases the steering assist torque in a direction of turning the vehicle when the value indicating understeer condition is higher than a first reference value.
