Abstract

Systems and methods for conducting hearing tests with real-time ambient noise measurement are provided. More particularly, one or more microphones are provided to measure ambient noise in a test area during a time interval in which hearing test tones are provided to the patient. By measuring ambient noise during the actual presentation of the test tones, or at least near in time thereto, a much better indication of the reliability of the hearing test is provided. Methods of conducting a hearing test are also provided that comprise presenting a test tone to a patient and simultaneously measuring the ambient noise in the test area during at least a portion of the presentation of the test tone.

Claims

1. A method for conducting a hearing test on a first ear of a patient in a test area comprising:

presenting a predetermined sound to the first ear for a desired time interval, wherein said presenting comprises sequentially presenting a series of test tones and recording a plurality of threshold hearing values corresponding to each said tone;

simultaneously with each said test tone presentation, recording an ambient noise level;

comparing the recorded ambient noise level to a maximum permissible ambient noise level; and

determining whether the recorded ambient noise level is greater than the maximum permissible ambient noise level;

repeating for a preset number of times the step of presenting the predetermined sound to the first ear if the recorded ambient noise level is greater than the maximum permissible ambient noise level, wherein said test proceeds regardless of whether an ambient noise level is detected that is greater than the maximum permissible ambient noise level, and wherein

if said ambient noise level exceeds said maximum permissible level during each said presentation of each said tone, logging the best of said recorded threshold levels, wherein said best level is the threshold level recorded when the ambient noise level is the lowest of said recorded ambient noise levels, whereby test results are obtained.

2. The method of claim 1 comprising producing a diagnostic report comprising an indication of each instance when ambient noise exceeded acceptable levels during said hearing test.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising automatically sending a prompt or alert to a hearing health professional upon the occurrence of a predetermined condition.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said condition is chosen from the group consisting of completion of the hearing test, non-response by the patient and inappropriate response by the patient.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

producing a diagnostic report containing said test results.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said conducting of said hearing test on a first ear of a patient in a test area, is carried out with a system comprising:

an insert probe for engaging the first ear, said insert probe comprising an earphone selected from the group consisting of a supraaural earphone, a circumaural earphone, and an insert earphone;

a first transducer for delivering a test sound to the first ear through said earphone; and

a second transducer for measuring the ambient noise in the test area.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the first transducer comprises a speaker.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said second transducer comprises a microphone.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising a computer to couple said first transducer and said second transducer such that the ambient noise in the test area is measured while the test sound is delivered to the first ear.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said hearing test comprises a threshold hearing test and said method further comprises:

self-administering the threshold hearing test on said first ear by said patient in said test area wherein said method is carried out with an apparatus comprising;

a speaker for providing a test tone having a desired frequency and sound pressure level to said first ear; and

a microphone for measuring the ambient noise in the test area during at least a portion of said hearing test.
