Abstract

A picture to be reproduced and displayed on a television monitor (10) is discerned as a plurality of partitioned areas in correspondence to keys labeled “1” to “9” disposed on a remote control unit (R). After having zoomed in a picture in a partitioned center area by operating a zoom key disposed on the remote control unit, a partial picture in a partitioned area corresponding to a given one of the keys “1” to “9” is zoomed in with a desired magnification factor in response to operation of the given key. Position of the zoomed-in partial picture on a full screen and the magnification factor thereof can be visually recognized by displaying cursors correspondingly.

Claims

1. A picture apparatus for reading out first picture data from a recording medium and processing the first picture data to thereby derive second picture data for generating a zoomed-in picture on a screen by magnifying a partial area of a pre-zoom picture based on the first picture data, said picture apparatus comprising:

a picture data processor dividing the pre-zoom picture into a total of M×

N (where M and N are integers) partial areas indicative of selectable zoom-in areas;

a plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys disposed at least on either one of a main body of said picture apparatus or a remote control unit; and

a storage storing correspondence relations between said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and said M×

N partial areas of the pre-zoom picture of the screen;

wherein said picture data processor generating the second picture data corresponding to an operated one of said zoom-in area designating keys, and

wherein relative locations of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys with respect to one another substantially correspond to relative locations of the M×

N partial areas with respect to one another of the pre-zoom picture on the screen.

2. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and said M×

N partial areas of the screen are arrayed orderly such that individual keys of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys can be intuitively associated with individual areas of said M×

N partial areas of the picture on the screen without any user-need to reference any labeling.

3. A picture apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys are arrayed orderly in an uninterrupted array such that individual keys of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys can be intuitively associated with individual areas of said M×

N partial areas of the picture on the screen without any user-need to reference any labeling.

4. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein an arrayed arrangement of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys matches an arrayed arrangement of the M×

N partial areas of the picture on the screen in layout, so as to have intuitive one-to-one correspondence between each arrayed M×

N zoom-in area designating key and each arrayed M×

N partial area of the picture on the screen.

5. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, comprising:

a memory storing graphic data indicating to which of the M×

N partial areas as arrayed in horizontal and vertical directions of said zoomed-in picture on the screen, that ones of the plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys correspond; and

,

wherein said picture data processor generates a combined signal combining the second picture data and the graphic data read out from said memory.

6. A picture apparatus according to claim 5, wherein an image portion of said combined signal which corresponds to said graphic data, provides an intuitive visual indication of an area of a horizontal and vertical region of the pre-zoom picture, to which each zoomed-in picture pertains.

7. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, comprising:

a memory storing elevator bar graphic data indicating to which of the areas of the picture on the screen based on said first image data as arrayed in horizontal and vertical directions, that said zoomed-in picture generated for display on the basis of said second image data belongs, wherein said image data processor generates a combined signal for displaying a composite image including both said second image data and said elevator bar graphic data read out from said memory.

8. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys is used for designating the M×

N partial areas after a zoom key disposed at least on either one of the main body or the remote control unit is operated, and is used for other purposes when said zoom key is not operated, said M×

N zoom-in area designating keys including ones of keys labeled “

1”

to “

9”

respectively for the other purposes, and disposed in a three-row-by-three-column (3×

3) array.

9. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said M and N are each integers of 3 or higher.

10. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein ones of said M×

N partial areas partially overlap with one another.

11. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, comprising:

a selector unit to allow user selection between at least a first magnifying level and a second magnifying level having a higher magnifying level than said first magnifying level;

wherein ones of said M×

N partial areas partially overlap with one another for said second magnifying level; and

wherein, when the second magnifying level is user-selected, a first subset of the M×

N partial areas is displayed in a first pre-zoom picture, and a differing subset of the M×

N partial areas is displayed in a second pre-zoom picture.

12. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and the M×

N partial areas are each arrayed in a substantially orthogonal array.

13. A picture apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the entire pre-zoom picture being divided into M×

N partial areas.

14. For a picture apparatus for reading out first picture data from a recording medium and processing said first picture data to thereby derive a zoomed-in picture on a screen by magnifying a partial area of a pre-zoom picture, a zoom processing method comprising:

dividing the pre-zoom picture into a total of M×

N (where M and N are integers) partial areas indicative of selectable zoom-in areas;

storing correspondence relations between a plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and said M×

N partial areas of the pre-zoom picture of the screen, where the plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys are on at least either one of a main body of said picture apparatus or a remote control unit; and

generating the zoomed-in picture corresponding to an operated one of said M×

N zoom-in area designating keys;

wherein relative locations of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys with respect to one another substantially correspond to relative locations of the M×

N partial areas with respect to one another of the pre-zoom picture on the screen.

15. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and said M×

N partial areas of the screen are arrayed orderly such that individual keys of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys can be intuitively associated with individual areas of said M×

N partial areas of the picture on the screen without any user-need to reference any labeling.

16. A zoom processing method according to claim 15, wherein said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys are arrayed orderly in an uninterrupted array such that individual keys of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys can be intuitively associated with individual areas of said M×

N partial areas of the picture on the screen without any user-need to reference any labeling.

17. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein an arrayed arrangement of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys matches an arrayed arrangement of said M×

N partial areas of the picture on the screen in layout, so as to have intuitive one-to-one correspondence between each arrayed M×

N zoom-in area designating key and each arrayed M×

N partial area of the picture on the screen.

18. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, comprising:

storing, in a memory, graphic data indicating to which of said M×

N partial areas as arrayed in horizontal and vertical directions of said zoomed-in picture on the screen, that ones of the plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys correspond; and

,

generating a combined signal combining the second picture data and the graphic data read out from said memory.

19. A zoom processing method according to claim 18, wherein an image portion of said combined signal which corresponds to said graphic data, provides an intuitive visual indication of an area of a horizontal and vertical region of the pre-zoom picture, to which each zoomed-in picture pertains.

20. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, comprising:

storing, in a memory, elevator bar graphic data indicating to which of the areas of the picture on the screen based on said first image data as arrayed in horizontal and vertical directions, that said zoomed-in picture generated for display on the basis of said second image data belongs, and generating a combined signal for displaying a composite image including both said second image data and said elevator bar graphic data read out from said memory.

21. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys is used for designating the M×

N partial areas after a zoom key disposed at least on either one of the main body or the remote control unit is operated, and is used for other purposes when said zoom key is not operated, said zoom-in area designating keys including ones of keys labeled “

1”

to “

9”

respectively for the other purposes, and disposed in a three-row-by-three-column (3×

3) array.

22. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein said M and N are each integers of 3 or higher.

23. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein ones of said M×

N partial areas partially overlap with one another.

24. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, comprising:

allowing user selection between at least a first magnifying level and a second magnifying level having a higher magnifying level than said first magnifying level;

wherein ones of said M×

N partial areas partially overlap with one another for said second magnifying level; and

wherein, when the second magnifying level is user-selected, displaying a first subset of the M×

N partial areas in a first pre-zoom picture, and displaying a differing subset of the M×

N partial areas in a second pre-zoom picture.

25. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein the plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and the M×

N partial areas are each arrayed in a substantially orthogonal array.

26. A zoom processing method according to claim 14, wherein the entire pre-zoom picture being divided into M×

N partial areas.

27. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer executable instructions to perform, for a picture apparatus for reading out first picture data from a recording medium and processing said first picture data to thereby derive a zoomed-in picture on a screen by magnifying a partial area of a pre-zoom picture, a zoom processing method, said program product:

dividing the pre-zoom picture into a total of M×

N (where M and N are integers) partial areas indicative of selectable zoom-in areas;

storing correspondence relations between a plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys and said M×

N partial areas of the pre-zoom picture of the screen, where the plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys are on at least either one of a main body of said picture apparatus or a remote control unit; and

generating the zoomed-in picture corresponding to an operated one of said M×

N zoom-in area designating keys;

wherein relative locations of said plurality of M×

N zoom-in area designating keys with respect to one another substantially correspond to relative locations of the M×

N partial areas with respect to one another of the pre-zoom picture on the screen.
