A display element which comprises a coloring substance, which separates out, dissolves, or changes in color upon electrochemical reduction or oxidation, and a polymeric electrolyte, which are both held between a first electrode and a second electrode, said polymeric electrolyte being formed from an uncrosslinked polymer as a starting material by polymerization or crosslinking between said first and second electrodes,wherein the second electrode comprises carbon supported on a metal electrode, andwherein the metal electrode is selected from the group consisting of platinum, chromium, aluminum, cobalt, and palladium.
