1. An identification document for a subject, comprising:
- a) a substrate;
b) a visual image formed on the substrate or a recording layer over the substrate, such visual image including at least a face image of the subject in a first area; and
c) steganographic but retrievable embedded information formed in the face image in the first area but not formed in a second area of the visual image, such embedded information corresponding to the identity of the subject, wherein the steganographic embedded information is embedded through subtle alterations of at least some elements corresponding to the face image in the first area wherein the subtle alterations are not readily apparent to a human observer of the first area of the identification document.

Abstract
The present invention relates to an identification document for a subject. The identification document includes a substrate, and a visual image formed on the substrate. The visual image includes a face image of the subject in a first area, and invisible but retrievable embedded information formed in the face image in the first area but not formed in a second area of the visual image. The embedded information corresponds to the identity of the subject and is usable to identify the subject.
