1. A device for collecting a specimen from a mass of tissue, comprising:

  • a shaft defining a proximal end and a distal end that defines a tip;

    a specimen collection assembly disposed along the shaft and proximally away from the tip thereof, the specimen collection assembly including a flexible membrane that is configured to come into contact with and collect the specimen, the flexible membrane being configured to cover only a portion of a circumference of the shaft when collecting the specimen;

    a specimen management assembly, the specimen management assembly being disposed partially within the shaft and proximally away from the tip thereof, the specimen management assembly being coupled to and configured to act upon the specimen collection assembly to draw the specimen collected in the flexible membrane toward the proximal end of the shaft.
