1. A method for detecting deterioration of the tension-load bearing capacity of an elevator rope that is fixed at termination points in an elevator assembly, the elevator rope comprising an electrically conductive, tension bearing component encased in a non-conductive jacket, the method comprising the steps of:
- applying an electric current through the component substantially between the termination points of the elevator rope;
determining electrical resistance of the component; and
relating the determined resistance to the tension-load bearing capacity of the elevator rope.
