Abstract

A feedthrough terminal assembly for an active implantable medical device utilizes an insert to establish a reliable electrical connection between capacitor electrode plates, via inner surface metallization of a capacitor aperture, and an associated terminal pin 10, which passes at least partially therethrough. The inserts are preferably resiliently flexible, such as a spring, to establish this connection. The insert also serves to establish a mechanical connection between the capacitor and the terminal pin.

Claims

1. A feedthrough terminal assembly for an active implantable medical device, comprising:

a feedthrough capacitor having an aperture therethrough and first and second sets of electrode plates;

a terminal pin extending at least partially through the aperture;

a conductive insert disposed within the aperture for conductively coupling the terminal pin and the first set of electrode plates; and

means for conductively coupling the second set of electrode plates to a ground plane for the active implantable medical device.

2. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, including a metallization applied to an exterior surface of the capacitor and conductively coupled to the second set of electrode plates, and means for conductively coupling the exterior surface metallization to the ground plane.

3. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 2, wherein conductively coupling means comprises thermal-setting conductive adhesives, conductive polyimides, solders, welds, or brazes.

4. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 2, wherein the ground plane comprises a housing for the active implantable medical device.

The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, including surface metallization within the aperture for conductively coupling the first set of electrode plates, and wherein the conductive insert is disposed between and physically contacts the terminal pin and the interior aperture surface metallization.

6. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 5, wherein the insert comprises a head having a plurality of resiliently flexible legs extending therefrom and insertable into the aperture.

7. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 6, wherein the head is configured to rest on the capacitor surrounding the aperture.

8. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 6, wherein the legs are non-planar so as to physically contact the terminal pin and the aperture metallization.

9. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 6, wherein the head extends partially into the aperture.

10. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the terminal pin comprises a conductive and non-oxidizable material.

11. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the insert comprises a conductive and non-oxidizable material.

12. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the insert comprises a material which changes dimensions at different temperatures.

13. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 12, wherein the insert has a first dimension at room temperature and a second expanded dimension at human body temperature.

14. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 13, wherein the insert comprises nitinol.

15. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, including an adhesive for securing the insert within the aperture.

16. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 15, wherein the adhesive comprises an epoxy preform disposed over the insert and cured within the aperture.

17. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the insert comprises a resiliently flexible material.

18. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 17, wherein the insert comprises a spring.

19. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the insert includes barbs permitting the insertion of the insert into the aperture, but impeding removal of the insert therefrom.

20. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, further comprising an insulating washer disposed between the capacitor and a ferrule.

21. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the active implantable medical device comprises a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a cardiac sensing system, a neurostimulator, a cochlear implant, a deep brain stimulator, a congestive heart failure device, a hearing implant, a drug pump, a ventricular assist device, an insulin pump, a spinal cord stimulator, an artificial heart, an incontinence device, a bone growth stimulator, a gastric pacemaker, or a prosthetic device.

22. A feedthrough terminal assembly for an active implantable medical device, comprising:

a feedthrough capacitor having an aperture therethrough and first and second sets of electrode plates;

a terminal pin extending at least partially through the aperture;

a conductive insert comprised of resiliently flexible material disposed with the aperture so as to physically contact the terminal pin and the interior surface metallization for conductively coupling the terminal pin and the first set of electrode plates;

a metallization applied to an exterior surface of the capacitor and conductively coupled to the second set of electrode plates; and

means for conductively coupling the exterior surface metallization to a ground plane of the active implantable medical device.

The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein the active implantable medical device comprises a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a cardiac sensing system, a neurostimulator, a cochlear implant, a deep brain stimulator, a congestive heart failure device, a hearing implant, a drug pump, a ventricular assist device, an insulin pump, a spinal cord stimulator, an artificial heart, an incontinence device, a bone growth stimulator, a gastric pacemaker, or a prosthetic device.

24. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein conductively coupling means comprises thermal-setting conductive adhesives, conductive polyimides, solders, welds, or brazes, and the ground plane comprises a housing for the active implantable medical device.

25. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 24, further comprising an insulating washer disposed between the capacitor and the ferrule.

26. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein the terminal pin and the insert comprise conductive and non-oxidizable materials.

27. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein the insert comprises a material which changes dimensions at different temperatures, wherein the insert has a first dimension at room temperature and a second expanded dimension at human body temperature.

28. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, including an adhesive for securing the insert within the aperture, wherein the adhesive comprises an epoxy preform disposed over the insert and cured within the aperture.

29. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein the insert comprises a spring.

30. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein the insert includes barbs permitting the insertion of the insert into the aperture, but impeding removal of the insert therefrom.

31. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein the insert comprises a head having a plurality of resiliently flexible and non-planar legs extending therefrom and insertable into the aperture.

32. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 31, wherein the head is configured to rest on the capacitor surrounding the aperture.

33. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 31, wherein the head extends partially into the aperture.

34. A feedthrough terminal assembly for an active implantable medical device, comprising:

a feedthrough capacitor having an aperture therethrough and first and second sets of electrode plates, the second set of electrode plates being conductively coupled to metallization applied to an exterior surface of the capacitor, and the first set of electrode plates being conductively coupled to metallization applied to an interior surface of the aperture;

an insulating washer disposed between the capacitor and the ferrule;

means for conductively coupling the outer metallization to a ferrule;

a terminal pin extending at least partially through the aperture; and

a conductive insert comprised of resiliently flexible material disposed with the aperture so as to physically contact the terminal pin and the interior surface metallization for conductively coupling the terminal pin and the first set of electrode plates, and for mechanically coupling the terminal pin to the feedthrough capacitor.

35. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, wherein the terminal pin comprises a conductive and non-oxidizable material.

36. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, wherein the conductive insert comprises a conductive and non-oxidizable material.

37. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, wherein the conductive insert comprises a material which changes dimensions at different temperatures, wherein the insert has a first dimension at room temperature and a second expanded dimension at human body temperature.

38. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 37, wherein the insert comprises nitinol.

39. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, including an adhesive for securing the insert within the aperture, wherein the adhesive comprises an epoxy preform disposed over the insert and cured within the aperture.

40. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, wherein the insert includes barbs permitting the insertion of the insert into the aperture, but impeding removal of the insert therefrom.

41. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, wherein the insert comprises a head having a plurality of resiliently flexible and non-planar legs extending therefrom and insertable into the aperture.

42. The feedthrough terminal assembly of claim 34, wherein the active implantable medical device comprises a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a cardiac sensing system, a neurostimulator, a cochlear implant, a deep brain stimulator, a congestive heart failure device, a hearing implant, a drug pump, a ventricular assist device, an insulin pump, a spinal cord stimulator, an artificial heart, an incontinence device, a bone growth stimulator, a gastric pacemaker, or a prosthetic device.
