1. A method of performing call progress analysis in a telephone system in which different types of in-band signaling tone plans are used, said telephone system including a packet network for providing packet-based transmission of media and signaling traffic, comprising:

  • receiving a call initiation message from a call initiator coupled to the packet network;

    performing, by a first node coupled to the packet network, a routing function including determining, from address information for a call destination contained in the call initiation message, which of different types of in-band signaling tone plans is utilized by equipment associated with the call destination; and

    performing, by a second node coupled to the packet network, a media processing function including, based upon the signaling tone plan type determination, selecting a corresponding type of call progress tone analysis resource and allocating the selected call progress tone analysis resource to the call.
