1. A method for operating a cardiac pacemaker, comprising:

  • sensing a ventricle designated as a rate chamber through a ventricular sensing channel and generating a ventricular sense upon detection of depolarization occurring in the rate chamber;

    pacing a ventricle contralateral to the rate chamber, designated as a synchronized chamber, at a specified pacing instant defined with respect to expiration of a rate chamber escape interval, wherein the rate chamber escape interval is reset by a rate chamber sense but not reset by a synchronized chamber sense; and

    ,decreasing the rate chamber escape interval toward a lower limit value after a ventricular sense and increasing the rate chamber escape interval toward an upper limit value after a ventricular pace.
