1. A method of providing a driving task demand signal indicative of external distraction to a vehicle operator based on speed variability of nearby objects, the method comprising the following steps:

  • sensing a coverage zone in relation to a vehicle;

    detecting target objects in the sensed zone;

    measuring speeds of the detected target objects in the sensed zone in consecutive time frames;

    deriving a speed variability of the targeted objects from a between-target speed variability calculated from the measured speeds of a plurality of the detected target objects in one of the time frames, andgenerating the driving task demand signal from the derived speed variability of the targeted objects.
