Abstract

At the transmitter side, carrier waves are modulated according to an input signal for producing relevant signal points in a signal space diagram. The input signal is divided into, two, first and second, data streams. The signal points are divided into signal point groups to which data of the first data stream are assigned. Also, data of the second data stream are assigned to the signal points of each signal point group. A difference in the transmission error rate between first and second data streams is developed by shifting the signal points to other positions in the space diagram. At the receiver side, the first and/or second data streams can be reconstructed from a received signal. In TV broadcast service, a TV signal is divided by a transmitter into, low and high, frequency band components which are designated as a first and a second data stream respectively. Upon receiving the TV signal, a receiver can reproduce only the low frequency band component or both the low and high frequency band components, depending on its capability.

Claims

1. A signal transmission apparatus for transmitting a first data stream and a second data stream, said signal transmission apparatus comprising:

a modulator operable to modulate the first data stream according to an m-level PSK and modulate the second data stream according to an n-level PSK to produce first and second modulated signals;

a converter operable to convert the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

a transmitter operable to transmit the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second second converted signal.

2. A signal transmission apparatus according to claim 1, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

3. A signal transmission apparatus according to claim 1, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

4. A signal transmission apparatus according to claim 1, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

5. A signal transmission apparatus for transmitting a first data stream and a second data stream, said signal transmission apparatus comprising:

a modulator operable to modulate the first data stream according to an m-level QAM and modulate the second data stream according to an n-level QAM to produce first and second modulated signals;

a converter operable to convert the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

a transmitter operable to transmit the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal.

6. A signal transmission apparatus according to claim 5, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

7. A signal transmission apparatus according to claim 5, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

8. A signal transmission apparatus according to claim 5, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

9. A signal receiving apparatus for receiving a first converted signal which is a first modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and a second converted signal which is a second modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, said signal receiving apparatus comprising:

a converter operable to convert the received first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, the first modulated signal has information of a first data stream and the second modulated signal has information of a second data stream, the first modulated signal is an m-level PSK modulated signal, the second modulated signal is an n-level PSK modulated signal, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal; and

a demodulator operable to demodulate the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

10. A signal receiving apparatus according to claim 9, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

11. A signal receiving apparatus according to claim 9, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

12. A signal receiving apparatus according to claim 9, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

13. A signal receiving apparatus for receiving a first converted signal which is a first modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and a second converted signal which is a second modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, said signal receiving apparatus comprising:

a converter operable to convert the received first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, the first modulated signal has information of a first data stream and the second modulated signal has information of a second data stream, the first modulated signal is an m-level QAM modulated signal, the second modulated signal is an n-level QAM modulated signal, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal; and

a demodulator operable to demodulate the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

14. A signal receiving apparatus according to claim 13, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

15. A signal receiving apparatus according to claim 13, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

16. A signal receiving apparatus according to claim 13, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

17. A signal transmission system comprising a signal transmission apparatus and a signal receiving apparatus,

said signal transmission apparatus comprising:

a modulator operable to modulate a first data stream according to an m-level PSK and modulate a second data stream according to an n-level PSK to produce first and second modulated signals;

a converter operable to convert the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

a transmitter operable to transmit the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal;

said signal receiving apparatus comprising;

a converter operable to convert the transmitted first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals; and

a demodulator operable to demodulate the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

18. A signal transmission system according to claim 17, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

19. A signal transmission system according to claim 17, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

20. A signal transmission system according to claim 17, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

21. A signal transmission system comprising a signal transmission apparatus and a signal receiving apparatus,

said signal transmission apparatus comprising:

a modulator operable to modulate a first data stream according to an m-level QAM and modulate a second data stream according to an n-level QAM to produce first and second modulated signal;

a converter operable to convert the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

a transmitter operable to transmit the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal;

said signal receiving apparatus comprising;

a converter operable to convert the transmitted first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals; and

a demodulator operable to demodulate the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

22. A signal transmission system according to claim 21, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

23. A signal transmission system according to claim 21, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

24. A signal transmission system according to claim 21, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

25. A signal transmission method for transmitting a first data stream and a second data stream, said signal transmission method comprising:

modulating the first data stream according to an m-level PSK and modulating the second data stream according to an n-level PSK to produce first and second modulated signals;

converting the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

transmitting the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal.

26. A signal transmission method according to claim 25, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

27. A signal transmission method according to claim 25, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

28. A signal transmission method according to claim 25, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

29. A signal transmission method for transmitting a first data stream and a second data stream, said signal transmission method comprising:

modulating the first data stream according to an m-level QAM and modulating the second data stream according to an n-level QAM to produce first and second modulated signals;

converting the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

transmitting the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal.

30. A signal transmission method according to claim 29, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

31. A signal transmission method according to claim 29, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

32. A signal transmission method according to claim 29, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

33. A signal receiving method for receiving a first converted signal which is a first modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and a second converted signal which is a second modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, said signal receiving method comprising:

converting the received first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, the first modulated signal has information of a first data stream and the second modulated signal has information of a second data stream, the first modulated signal is an m-level PSK modulated signal, the second modulated signal is an n-level PSK modulated signal, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal; and

demodulating the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the information of the interval data.

34. A signal receiving method according to claim 33, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

35. A signal receiving method according to claim 33, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

36. A signal receiving method according to claim 33, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

37. A signal receiving method for receiving a first converted signal which is a fist modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and a second converted signal which is a second modulated signal converted according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, said signal receiving method comprising:

converting the received first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, the first modulated signal has information of a first data stream and the second modulated signal has information of a second data stream, the first modulated signal is an m-level QAM, the second modulated signal is an n-level QAM modulated signal, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal; and

demodulating the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

38. A signal receiving method according to claim 37, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

39. A signal receiving method according to claim 37, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

40. A signal receiving method according to claim 37, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

41. A signal transmission and receiving method comprising a signal transmission method and a signal receiving method,

said signal transmission method comprising:

modulating a first data stream according to an m-level PSK and modulating a second data stream according to an n-level PSK to produce first and second modulated signals;

converting the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

transmitting the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal;

said signal receiving method comprising;

converting the transmitted first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals;

demodulating the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

42. A signal transmission and receiving method according to claim 41, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

43. A signal transmission and receiving method according to claim 41, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

44. A signal transmission and receiving method according to claim 41, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.

45. A signal transmission and receiving method comprising a signal transmission method and a signal receiving method,

said signal transmission method comprising:

modulating a first data stream according to an m-level QAM and modulating a second data stream according to an n-level QAM to produce first and second modulated signals;

converting the first and second modulated signals into first and second converted signals according to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing; and

transmitting the first and second converted signals;

wherein the second converted signal has an effective symbol part and a guard interval, and the first data stream has an interval data including information of the guard interval of the second converted signal;

said signal receiving method comprising;

converting the transmitted first and second converted signals into the first and second modulated signals;

demodulating the first and second modulated signals to produce the first data stream and the second data stream, wherein the second data stream is produced according to the interval data.

46. A signal transmission and receiving method according to claim 45, wherein m is less than or equal to 4.

47. A signal transmission and receiving method according to claim 45, wherein n is greater than or equal to 4.

48. A signal transmission and receiving method according to claim 45, wherein m is less than or equal to 4 and n is greater than or equal to 4.
