Abstract

A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. Elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

Claims

1. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:

providing first and second spatial light modulators in an optical path between a light source and the viewing position, each of the first and second spatial light modulators comprising a plurality of controllable pixels, wherein for each pixel of one of the first and second spatial light modulators, the other one of the first and second spatial light modulators has more than one corresponding pixel;

processing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;

in response to the image data, setting the pixels of the first spatial light modulator to project a pattern of light onto the second spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;

computing intensities of the pattern of light at the pixels of the second spatial light modulator; and

,

based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator comprises dividing the desired luminance values for areas corresponding to the pixels of the second spatial light modulator by the computed intensities of the pattern of light and setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator based upon a result of the dividing.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first spatial light modulator has a resolution lower than a resolution of the second spatial light modulator.

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein, at the second spatial light modulator, light from pixels of the first spatial light modulator is characterized by a spread function having a full width at half-maximum in the range of 0.3×

d₂, where d₂ is a center-to-center inter-pixel spacing of pixels of the first spatial light modulator.

5. A method according to claim 3 wherein, at the second spatial light modulator, light from pixels of the first spatial light modulator is characterized by a spread function having a full width at half-maximum of at least 0.3×

d₂ where d₂ is a center-to-center inter-pixel spacing of pixels of the first spatial light modulator.

A method according to claim 1 wherein setting the pixels of the first spatial light modulator comprises, for each pixel, setting a value corresponding to one of a first number of steps and wherein setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator comprises, for each pixel, setting a value corresponding to one of a second number of steps, wherein the second number of steps is greater than the first number of steps.

7. A method according to claim 1 comprising diffusing light that has been modulated by the first and second spatial light modulators.

8. A method according to claim 7 wherein diffusing the light comprises projecting the light onto a screen on a side of the screen facing away from the viewing position.

9. A method according to claim 7 wherein diffusing the light comprises projecting the light onto a screen on a side of the screen facing toward the viewing position.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein the pixels of the second spatial light modulator have controllable retro-reflection properties and setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator comprises setting retro-reflection properties of the pixels of the second spatial light modulator.

11. A method according to claim 1 wherein the pixels of the second spatial light modulator have controllable light transmission properties and setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator comprises setting light transmission properties of the pixels of the second spatial light modulator.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein the second spatial light modulator is larger than the first spatial light modulator and the method comprises expanding light in the optical path between the first and second spatial light modulators.

13. A method according to claim 1 comprising collimating the light that has been modulated by the second spatial light modulator.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first spatial light modulator comprises a color spatial light modulator wherein setting the pixels of the first spatial light modulator comprises separately setting a plurality of color values for each pixel of the first spatial light modulator.

15. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:

providing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;

in response to the image data, projecting a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;

computing intensities of the pattern of light at pixels of the spatial light modulator; and

,

based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image.

16. A method according to claim 15 wherein the desired image is a color image and projecting the pattern of light comprises separately modulating light of a plurality of colors.

26. A method according to claim 15 wherein the pattern of light has a spatial resolution lower than that of the spatial light modulator.

17. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:

providing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;

in response to the image data, projecting a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;

computing intensities of the pattern of light at pixels of the spatial light modulator; and

,

based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image,

wherein setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator comprises dividing the desired luminance values for areas corresponding to the pixels of the spatial light modulator by the computed intensities of the pattern of light and setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator based upon a result of the dividing.

18. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:

providing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;

in response to the image data, projecting a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;

computing intensities of the pattern of light at pixels of the spatial light modulator; and

,

based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image,

wherein the spatial light modulator comprises a second spatial light modulator and projecting the pattern of light onto the second spatial light modulator comprises modulating light with a first spatial light modulator having a resolution different from a resolution of the second spatial light modulator.

19. A method according to claim 18 wherein the first spatial light modulator has a lower spatial resolution than the second spatial light modulator.

20. A method according to claim 18 wherein the first spatial light modulator has a higher spatial resolution than the second spatial light modulator.

21. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:

providing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;

in response to the image data, projecting a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;

computing intensities of the pattern of light at pixels of the spatial light modulator; and

,

based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image,

wherein the spatial light modulator comprises a second spatial light modulator and projecting the pattern of light onto the second spatial light modulator comprises modulating light with a first spatial light modulator comprising an array of pixels.

22. A method according to claim 21 wherein the first and second spatial light modulators have different numbers of pixels.

23. A method according to claim 22 wherein the first spatial light modulator has more pixels than the second spatial light modulator.

24. A method according to claim 22 wherein the first spatial light modulator has fewer pixels than the second spatial light modulator.

25. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:

providing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;

in response to the image data, projecting a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;

computing intensities of the pattern of light at pixels of the spatial light modulator; and

,

based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image,

wherein the spatial light modulator comprises a second spatial light modulator and projecting the pattern of light onto the second spatial light modulator comprises modulating light with a first spatial light modulator comprising an array of pixels and wherein a ratio of a luminance of points in the resulting image for which corresponding pixels of the first and second spatial light modulators are both set to provide a maximum illumination to a luminance of points in the resulting image for which corresponding pixels of the first and second spatial light modulators are both set to provide a minimum illumination is in excess of 1000;

27. Display apparatus for displaying a resulting image to a viewer, the display apparatus comprising:

first and second spatial light modulators in an optical path between a light source and a viewing position, each of the first and second spatial light modulators comprising a plurality of controllable elements, wherein for each controllable element of one of the first and second spatial light modulators, the other one of the first and second spatial light modulators has more than one corresponding controllable elements and wherein settings of the controllable elements of the first spatial light modulator affect a pattern of light imaged onto the second spatial light modulator and settings of the controllable elements of the first and second spatial light modulators affect a resulting image viewable from the viewing position; and

,

a control system configured to control the controllable elements of the first and second spatial light modulators in response to image data provided to the control system, the image data defining a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image, the control system configured to;

set the controllable elements of the first spatial light modulator to approximate the desired image;

determine intensities of the pattern of light at the controllable elements of the second spatial light modulator when the controllable elements of the first spatial light modulator are set to approximate the desired image; and

,

set the controllable elements of the second spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image in response to the determined intensities.

28. Display apparatus according to claim 27 comprising a front-projection screen wherein the resulting image is projected onto the front projection screen from a front side of the front projection screen.

29. Display apparatus according to claim 27 comprising a rear-projection screen wherein the resulting image is projected onto the front projection screen from a rear side of the rear projection screen.

30. Display apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the second spatial light modulator comprises an array of elements having controllable light transmission properties.

31. Display apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the second spatial light modulator comprises an array of elements having controllable retro-reflection properties.

32. Display apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the second spatial light modulator comprises an array of electrophoretic display elements.

33. Display apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the first spatial light modulator is one of a plurality of first spatial light modulators, each of the plurality of first spatial light modulators is disposed to image a corresponding pattern of light onto the second spatial light modulator, and the corresponding patterns of light comprise patterns of a plurality of different colors.

34. Display apparatus for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the display apparatus comprising:

means for projecting a pattern of light that approximates a desired image onto a spatial light modulator in response to image data that defines the desired image, the image data specifying desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image; and

,

a controller configured to compute intensities of the pattern of light at the pixels of the spatial light modulator and, based on the computed intensities, to set pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image.

35. A method for displaying an image to a viewer, the method comprising:

providing image data that defines a desired image wherein image areas in the desired image have desired luminance values;

in response to the image data, controlling light emitted by pixels of an array of pixels to direct a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image; and

,

based on computed intensities of the pattern of light at pixels of the spatial light modulator, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image.

36. A method according to claim 35 wherein the array of pixels has a spatial resolution that is lower than a spatial resolution of the spatial light modulator.
