1. A method for displaying a resulting image to a viewer at a viewing position, the method comprising:
- providing first and second spatial light modulators in an optical path between a light source and the viewing position, each of the first and second spatial light modulators comprising a plurality of controllable pixels, wherein for each pixel of one of the first and second spatial light modulators, the other one of the first and second spatial light modulators has more than one corresponding pixel;
processing image data that defines a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image;
in response to the image data, setting the pixels of the first spatial light modulator to project a pattern of light onto the second spatial light modulator wherein the pattern of light approximates the desired image;
computing intensities of the pattern of light at the pixels of the second spatial light modulator; and
,based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the second spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image.

A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. Elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

,based on the computed intensities, setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image, wherein setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator comprises dividing the desired luminance values for areas corresponding to the pixels of the spatial light modulator by the computed intensities of the pattern of light and setting the pixels of the spatial light modulator based upon a result of the dividing.

27. Display apparatus for displaying a resulting image to a viewer, the display apparatus comprising:

first and second spatial light modulators in an optical path between a light source and a viewing position, each of the first and second spatial light modulators comprising a plurality of controllable elements, wherein for each controllable element of one of the first and second spatial light modulators, the other one of the first and second spatial light modulators has more than one corresponding controllable elements and wherein settings of the controllable elements of the first spatial light modulator affect a pattern of light imaged onto the second spatial light modulator and settings of the controllable elements of the first and second spatial light modulators affect a resulting image viewable from the viewing position; and
,a control system configured to control the controllable elements of the first and second spatial light modulators in response to image data provided to the control system, the image data defining a desired image comprising desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image, the control system configured to; set the controllable elements of the first spatial light modulator to approximate the desired image; determine intensities of the pattern of light at the controllable elements of the second spatial light modulator when the controllable elements of the first spatial light modulator are set to approximate the desired image; and

means for projecting a pattern of light that approximates a desired image onto a spatial light modulator in response to image data that defines the desired image, the image data specifying desired luminance values for image areas in the desired image; and
,a controller configured to compute intensities of the pattern of light at the pixels of the spatial light modulator and, based on the computed intensities, to set pixels of the spatial light modulator to reduce a difference between the pattern of light and the desired image.
