Abstract

A vascular sensing system includes blood flow restricting means, a sensor, and means for producing an output representing a return of blood flow after the blood vessel has been temporarily collapsed by the blood flow restricting means. The blood flow restricting means is capable of placement on a human toe having a blood vessel, and is capable of manipulating the blood vessel. The sensor is operably connected to the blood flow restricting means and is physically spaced from the toe. Further, a method of vascular sensing includes taking pressure measurements with an pressure cuff positioned on a toe, and conducting a waveform analysis of the pressure measurements to determine a return of blood flow pressure.

Claims

1. A vascular sensing system comprising:

blood flow restricting means for placement on a human toe having a blood vessel, wherein the blood flow restricting means is capable of manipulating the blood vessel;

a display for indicating vascular test locations, wherein a first vascular test location is indicated as the human toe;

a pressure sensor operably connected to the blood flow restricting means and physically spaced from the blood flow restricting means for producing a sensor signal as a function of pressure at the blood flow restricting means;

means for determining a return of blood flow pressure at the first vascular test location after the blood vessel has been temporarily collapsed by the blood flow restricting means based upon the sensor signal;

means for producing an output representing the return of blood flow pressure at the first vascular location.

2. The vascular sensing system of claim 1, wherein the return of blood flow pressure is a pre-determined percentage of a peak amplitude of pressure oscillations at the blood flow restricting means.

3. The vascular sensing system of claim 1, wherein the pressure sensor is positioned so as not to physically contact a patient'"'"'s body when in use.

4. The vascular sensing system of claim 1 and further comprising a diagnostic test unit.

5. A vascular sensing system comprising:

a display for indicating vascular test locations, wherein a first vascular test location corresponding to a human toe is indicated;

a first pressure cuff for placement at the first vascular test location on the human toe having a blood vessel, wherein the first pressure cuff is capable of manipulating the blood vessel;

a pressure sensor operably connected to the first pressure cuff for sensing cuff pressure at a location physically spaced from the toe and producing a sensor signal as a function of sensed cuff pressure;

means for determining a return of blood flow pressure after the blood vessel has been temporarily collapsed by the first pressure cuff based upon the sensor signal; and

means for producing an output representing the return of blood flow pressure at the first vascular location.

6. The vascular sensing system of claim 5, wherein the return of blood flow pressure is a pre-determined percentage of a peak amplitude of pressure oscillations at the first pressure cuff.

7. The vascular sensing system of claim 5, wherein the pressure sensor is positioned so as not to physically contact a patient'"'"'s body when in use.

8. The vascular sensing system of claim 5, wherein the first pressure cuff is an oscillometric pressure cuff.

9. The vascular sensing system of claim 5 and further comprising a diagnostic test unit.

10. The system of claim 5 and further comprising:

a single cuff connection port in fluid communication with the pressure sensor, wherein the first pressure cuff is removably operably connected to the cuff connection port; and

a second pressure cuff for placement at a second vascular test location spaced from the first vascular test location, wherein the second vascular test location is indicated by the display, and wherein the second cuff is capable of being removably operably connected to the cuff connection port while remaining in position at the second vascular test location.

11. A method of vascular sensing comprising:

designating a first segmental sphygmomanometric test location on a toe, wherein the designation is made using a display;

positioning a first pressure cuff at the first segmental sphygmomanometric test location;

taking pressure measurements with an the first pressure cuff positioned on the toe;

conducting a waveform analysis of the pressure measurements to determine a return of blood flow pressure; and

generating an output representing the return of blood flow pressure.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the return of blood flow pressure is determined as a function of a peak pressure oscillation amplitude.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the pressure cuff is an oscillometric pressure cuff.

14. The method of claim 11 and further comprising the step of:

performing a digit filtering process in order to reduce the influence of applied cuff pressure changes on the determination of the return of blood flow pressure.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the step of performing a digit filtering process includes:

detecting bleed rate change periods; and

zeroing a pressure bias signal during any bleed rate change periods detected, wherein the pressure bias signal is utilized to generate a waveform for the step of conducting a waveform analysis of the pressure measurements to determine a return of blood flow pressure.

16. A method of vascular sensing comprising:

displaying information that identifies a first vascular test location;

performing a first oscillometric test at the first vascular test location to obtain a first pressure value at a return of blood flow;

generating an output of the first pressure value

displaying information that identifies a second vascular test location;

performing a second oscillometric test at the second vascular test location to obtain a second pressure value at a return of blood flow; and

generating an output of the second pressure value,

wherein one of the first and second vascular test locations is on a first toe.

17. The method of claim 16 and further comprising the step of:

comparing the first pressure and the second pressure.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the second vascular test location is located on a second toe, and wherein the second vascular test location corresponds to a different bi-lateral segment than the first vascular test location.

19. The method of claim 16 and further comprising the steps of:

connecting a first pressure cuff to a fluid port to perform the first oscillometric test;

disconnecting the first pressure cuff from the fluid port; and

connecting a second pressure cuff to a fluid port to perform the second oscillometric test.
