Catheter balloon having a lubricious coating
First Claim
1. A balloon for a catheter, comprising a layer of porous polymeric lubricious material having a first inflatable portion which has a modified outer surface and a lubricious coating bonded to the modified outer surface, the modified outer surface being formed by a polymer impregnated in the porous polymeric material so that the lubricious coating is bonded to the polymer impregnated in the porous polymeric material, and a second inflatable portion longitudinally adjacent to the first inflatable portion which is not impregnated with the polymer and which is not coated with a lubricious coating, so that only the portion of the balloon layer coated with the lubricious coating is impregnated with the polymer.

Abstract
A balloon for a catheter and a method of making the balloon, having a layer of a porous polymeric material with a modified outer surface and a lubricious coating bonded to the modified outer surface. In one embodiment, the modified outer surface is formed by a polymer impregnated in the porous polymeric material, and the subsequently applied lubricious coating bonds to the impregnating polymer. In another embodiment, the modified outer surface is formed by a functionality deposited on the porous polymeric material which bonds to the subsequently applied lubricious coating. The modified outer surface provides an improved strong bond between the lubricious coating and the balloon, for improved catheter performance.

9. A balloon catheter, comprising:
-
a) an elongated shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and an inflation lumen; and b) a balloon on a distal shaft section, having an interior in fluid communication with the inflation lumen of the shaft, the balloon further having a proximal and a distal skirt section bonded to the shaft, an inflatable section therebetween, and an inner layer and an outer layer, the outer layer being a porous polymeric material having a first inflatable portion which has a modified outer surface formed by a polymer impregnated in porous polymeric material and a lubricious coating bonded to the polymer impregnated in the porous polymeric material of the outer layer, and a second inflatable portion which is longitudinally adjacent to the first inflatable portion and which does not have the modified outer surface, such that the outer surface of the outer layer along the second inflatable portion is not impregnated with the polymer and is not coated with lubricious coating. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13)
