Abstract

A valve assembly has a valve body and a fluid passage through the valve body with an inlet end and an outlet end. A valve seat is defined within the fluid passage. A sleeve is axially slidable within the fluid passage and has an upstream end, a downstream end, and an axial flow passage in communication with the inlet end and the outlet end of the fluid passage. A valve stem is pivotally mounted at a stem pivot spaced radially from the fluid passage. The valve stem is actuable to slide the sleeve between an open position with the downstream end spaced from the valve seat and a closed position with the downstream end borne against the valve seat to selectively control fluid flow through the flow passage to the outlet end. One end of the valve stem is coupled to the sleeve at a joint. The stem pivot accommodates relative axial movement of the valve stem as the sleeve slides within the fluid passage.

Claims

1. A valve assembly comprising:

a valve body;

a fluid passage through the valve body having an inlet end and an outlet end;

a valve seat defined within the fluid passage;

a sleeve axially slidable within the fluid passage and having an upstream end, a downstream end, and an axial flow passage in communication with the inlet end and the outlet end of the fluid passage; and

a valve stem pivotally mounted at a stem pivot spaced radially from the fluid passage, the valve stem being actuable to slide the sleeve between an open position with the downstream end spaced from the valve seat and a closed position with the downstream end borne against the valve seat to selectively control fluid flow through the flow passage to the outlet end and

wherein one end of the valve stem is coupled to the sleeve at a joint and wherein the stem pivot is arranged to accommodate a sliding motion between the valve stem and the stem pivot as the sleeve slides within the fluid passage.

2. A valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the joint is positionally fixed relative to the sleeve and permits pivotal rotation of the one end of the valve stem thereat.

3. A valve assembly according to claim 1, wherein the joint includes a clevis pivotally connecting the one end of the valve stem to the sleeve.

4. A valve assembly comprising:

a valve body;

a fluid passage through the valve body having an inlet end and an outlet end;

a valve seat defined within the fluid passage;

a sleeve axially slidable within the fluid passage and having an upstream end, a downstream end, and an axial flow passage in communication with the inlet end and the outlet end of the fluid passage;

a valve stem pivotally mounted at a stem pivot spaced radially from the fluid passage, the valve stem being actuable to slide the sleeve between an open position with the downstream end spaced from the valve seat and a closed position with the downstream end borne against the valve seat to selectively control fluid flow through the flow passage to the outlet end, wherein one end of the valve stem is coupled to the sleeve at a joint and wherein the stem pivot accommodates relative axial movement of the valve stem as the sleeve slides within the fluid passage;

a fulcrum positioned generally near a mid-portion of the valve stem; and

a biasing element arranged to bias the mid-portion of the valve stem against the fulcrum in a manner such that the valve stem is axially slidable as it pivots relative to the fulcrum.

5. A valve assembly according to claim 4, wherein the biasing element is a coil spring.

6. A valve assembly according to claim 4, wherein the fulcrum is a roller having an exterior circumferential channel of a configuration matching a portion of a cross section shape of the valve stem, the roller being freely rotatable about an axis.

7. A sleeve valve assembly comprising:

a valve body defining a fluid passage within an inlet end and an outlet end;

a valve seat within the fluid passage;

a stem housing extending radially from the valve body;

a sleeve axially slidable within the fluid passage and having an axial flow passage in communication with the inlet end and the outlet end of the fluid passage; and

a valve stem partly extending through the stem housing and being pivotable about a stem pivot to slide the sleeve between an open position and a closed position to selectively control fluid flow through the valve passage to the outlet end, wherein one end of the valve stem is coupled to the sleeve at a joint comprising a fulcrum having a rounded cross-sectional channel sized to pivotally and slidably receive a portion of the valve stem, the joint arranged to accommodate relative movement of the valve stem in an axial direction of the valve stem as the sleeve slides within the fluid passage.

8. A sleeve valve assembly according to claim 7, wherein the valve stem has another end opposite the one end pivotally coupled to a valve actuator which drives the valve stem to slide the sleeve between the open position and the closed position.

9. A sleeve valve assembly according to claim 7, wherein the joint is positionally fixed relative to the sleeve and permits pivotal rotation of the one end of the valve stem at the joint.

10. A sleeve valve assembly comprising:

a valve body defining a fluid passage within an inlet end and an outlet end;

a valve seat within the fluid passage;

a stem housing extending radially from the valve body;

a sleeve axially slidable within the fluid passage and having an axial flow passage in communication with the inlet end and the outlet end of the fluid passage; and

a valve stem partly extending through the stem housing and being pivotable about a stem pivot to slide the sleeve between an open position and a closed position to selectively control fluid flow through the valve passage to the outlet end, wherein one end of the valve stem is coupled to the sleeve at a joint and wherein the stem pivot accommodates relative movement of the valve stem in an axial direction of the valve stem as the sleeve slides within the fluid passage;

a fulcrum positioned generally near a mid-portion of the valve stem; and

a biasing element positioned to bias the valve stem generally near the mid-portion against the fulcrum, the fulcrum arranged to permit the valve stem to slide axially as it pivots relative to the fulcrum.

11. A sleeve valve assembly according to claim 10, wherein the biasing element is a coil spring.

12. A sleeve valve assembly according to claim 10, wherein the fulcrum is a roller, the roller arranged to rotate freely about an axis that is generally perpendicular to an axis of the valve stem.

13. A sleeve valve assembly comprising:

a valve body defining a fluid passage with an inlet end and an outlet end;

a valve seat within the fluid passage;

a sleeve axially slidable within the fluid passage and having an upstream end, a downstream end, and an axial flow passage in communication with the inlet end and the outlet end of the fluid passage; and

a valve stem pivotally mounted at a stem pivot spaced radially from the fluid passage, the valve stem extending generally radially from the sleeve and being actuable to slide the sleeve between an open position with the downstream end spaced from the valve seat and a closed position with the downstream end borne against the valve seat, wherein one end of the valve stem is pivotally coupled to the sleeve by a pivot pin having a fixed location on the sleeve, and wherein the stem moves axially relative to a valve stem axis as the sleeve slides within the fluid passage.
