1. A method of treatment, repair, or replacement of human or animal bone, comprising:

  • (a) preparing a semiconductor porous and/or polycrystalline silicon and a carrier material to form a silicon composite material such that at least part of the silicon is in contact with at least part of the carrier material;

    (b) implanting the silicon composite material; and

    (c) allowing the bone to bond to the silicon composite material;

    wherein the silicon and carrier material have a structure and composition such that at least part of the silicon induces bioactivity in at least part of the carrier material.
