Abstract

A device that is part of, and is addressable in, a local area network in a building for coupling a digital data signal to a data unit, the network including at least part of an existing telephone wire pair terminated by an outlet, the wire pair carrying a frequency multiplexed analog service signal and a digital data signal. The device includes: a telephone connector for connecting the device to the telephone wire pair; a filter coupled to the telephone connector to pass only the digital data signal; a modem coupled for bi-directional digital data signal communication with additional modems over the telephone wire pair; a data connector for connecting to the data unit; a data transceiver coupled to effect full-duplex serial digital data communication with the data unit; a power port; and a single enclosure housing the filter, the power supply, the modem and the data connector.

Claims

1. A device that is part of a local area network in a building for coupling a digital data signal to a data unit, the network including at least part of an existing telephone wire pair that is at least in part in walls of the building and is terminated by an outlet, the wire pair carrying a frequency multiplexed analog service signal and a digital data signal, said device comprising:

a telephone connector for connecting said device to the telephone wire pair;

a filter coupled to said telephone connector and having a data signal port operative to pass only the digital data signal;

a modem coupled to said data signal port for bi-directional digital data signal communication with one or more additional modems of the same type as said modem over the telephone wire pair;

a data connector for connecting to the data unit;

a data transceiver coupled between said data connector and said modem and operative to effect full-duplex serial digital data communication with the data unit;

a power port connectable to a power signal from a power signal source;

a power supply coupled between said power port and said modem for DC powering said modem from the power signal; and

a single enclosure housing said filter, said power supply, said modem and said data connector,

wherein said device is addressable in the local area network.

2. The device according to claim 1, wherein said device has a manually assigned address.

3. The device according to claim 1, wherein said device has an automatically assigned address.

4. The device according to claim 1, wherein said device has an address assigned by a data unit connected to said device.

5. The device according to claim 1, wherein said device is at least in part housed within an outlet.

6. The device according to claim 1, further comprising a power connector coupled to said power supply and operative for powering a device connected thereto.

7. The device according to claim 6, wherein information carried by the digital data signal is used to control the power signal.

8. The device according to claim 7, wherein the control is one of:

on/off operation;

timing of operations; and

delayed start.

9. The device according to claim 8, wherein the data signal is used to monitor the power signal.

10. The device according to claim 1, wherein the power signal is a direct current signal.

11. The device according to claim 1, wherein said device is pluggable into an outlet or attachable to an outlet.

12. The device according to claim 1, wherein the digital data communication with the data unit is Ethernet based.

13. The device according to claim 1, wherein said single enclosure is mountable in an outlet cavity.

14. The device according to claim 1, wherein said single enclosure is structured to at least in part replace an existing outlet.

15. The device according to claim 1, wherein the telephone wire pair simultaneously carries a power signal, and said power port is connected to the telephone wire pair for feeding said power supply from the power signal carried over the telephone wire pair.

16. The device according to claim 1, further comprising a second data connector coupled to said modem for connecting to a second data unit for bi-directional communication with the second data unit.

17. The device according to claim 1, further operative to couple an analog appliance to the analog service signal, said device further comprising an analog connector coupled to said telephone connector and connectable to the analog appliance.

18. The device according to claim 1, further operative to couple an analog unit to the digital data signal, said device further comprising an analog connector connectable to the analog unit for coupling an analog signal to the analog unit, and a converter between the analog and digital signals coupled between said analog connector and said modem.

19. The device according to claim 18, wherein the analog unit is an analog actuator for creating a physical phenomenon, and said converter is a digital to analog converter.

20. The device according to claim 18, wherein the analog unit is an analog sensor for sensing a physical phenomenon, and said converter is an analog to digital converter.

21. The device according to claim 18, wherein the analog unit is one of an audio unit and a video unit and the analog signal is one of an audio signal and a video signal.

22. The device according to claim 18, wherein the analog unit is a telephone unit, the analog connector is a telephone connector and the analog signal is a telephone signal.

23. The device according to claim 18, wherein the analog connector is coupled to said power supply and to the analog unit for powering the analog unit.

24. The device according to claim 1, wherein at least one parameter of said device is configurable by the data unit.

25. The device according to claim 1 further operative for coupling an analog telephone to a digitized telephone signal carried as part of said digital data signal, said device further comprising:

a telephone connector for coupling an analog telephone signal to the analog telephone set; and

a converter coupled between said telephone connector and said modem for converting between the digitized telephone signal and the analog telephone signal.

26. The device according to claim 1 further operative to provide a computer bus interface, said device further comprising a computer connector and mechanical means for connecting and attaching said computer connector to a computer plug-in unit, said computer connector being coupled to said modem.

27. The device according to claim 26 wherein said computer bus interface is one of:

ISA interface, a PCMCIA interface, an IDE interface, and a SCSI interface.

28. A local area network in a building for coupling together first and second data units in the building, said network comprising:

a telephone wire pair at least in part in walls of the building and terminated in outlets, said wire pair carrying an analog service signal and a bi-directional serial digital data signal frequency multiplexed with the analog service signal; and

at least two same first and second devices, each enclosed within a respective single enclosure located inside the building, each connected to said telephone wire pair and each connectable to a respective one of the first and second data units for bi-directional serial digital data communication with the respective data unit, and each operative to couple the bi-directional serial digital data signals carried over said telephone wire pair to the respective data unit,

wherein each of said devices is addressable in the local area network.

29. The network according to claim 28, wherein at least one of said devices is at least in part integrated into an outlet.

30. The network according to claim 28, wherein at least one of said devices is wall mounted.

31. The network according to claim 28, wherein at least one of said devices is attached to a wall of the building.

32. The network according to claim 28, wherein each of said devices has a manually assigned address.

33. The network according to claim 28, wherein each of said devices has an automatically assigned address.

34. The network according to claim 28, wherein each of said devices has an address assigned by one of said first and second data units or a further data unit connected to said device.

35. The network according to claim 28, wherein at least one of said devices is pluggable into an outlet.

36. The network according to claim 28, wherein at least one of said devices is attachable to an outlet.

37. The network according to claim 28, wherein communication with each of the data units is Ethernet based.

38. The network according to claim 28, wherein at least one of said devices is mountable into an outlet cavity.

39. The network according to claim 28, wherein said telephone wire pair simultaneously carries a power signal, and at least one of said devices is powered by the power signal.

40. The network according to claim 28, further operative to couple the analog service signal to an analog service unit, wherein at least one of said devices further comprises an analog connector coupled to said telephone wire pair and connectable to the analog service unit.

41. The network according to claim 28 configured as a point-to-point network, wherein said telephone wire pair connects only said first and second devices, each of said devices is connected to a distinct end of said telephone wire pair, and wherein said first and second devices communicate with one another only over said telephone wire pair.

42. The network according to claim 28 further operative to carry a telephone signal between said first and second devices over said telephone wire pair, wherein said first device is connectable to a digitized telephone signal, and said second device is connectable to a telephone set, for coupling the digitized telephone signal to the telephone set.

43. A device for coupling a digital data signal carried in a local area network in a building to an analog unit, the network including at least part of an existing telephone wire pair that is at least in part in walls of the building and is terminated by an outlet, the wire pair carrying a frequency multiplexed analog service signal and a digital data signal, said device comprising:

a telephone connector for connecting said device to the telephone wire pair;

a filter coupled to said telephone connector and having a data signal port operative to pass only the digital data signal;

a modem coupled to said data signal port for bi-directional digital data signal communication over the telephone wire pair;

an analog connector for coupling an analog signal to the analog unit;

a converter between analog and digital data signals coupled between said modem and said analog connector,

a power port connectable to a power signal,

a power supply coupled between said power port and said modem for DC powering said modem from said power signal; and

a single enclosure housing said filter, said power supply, said converter, said modem and said analog connector;

wherein said device is addressable in the local area network.

44. The device according to claim 43, wherein said modem is operative for bi-directional digital data signal communication with one or more similar modems over the telephone wire pair.

45. The device according to claim 43, further operative for coupling the digital data signal to a data unit, said device further comprising:

a data connector for connecting to the data unit;

a data transceiver coupled between said data connector and said modem, said data transceiver being operative for full-duplex serial digital data communicating with the data unit.

46. The device according to claim 45, wherein communication with said data unit is Ethernet based.

47. The device according to claim 43, wherein said device has a manually assigned address.

48. The device according to claim 43, wherein said device has an automatically assigned address.

49. The device according to claim 43, wherein said device has an address that is assigned by a data unit connected to said device.

50. The device according to claim 43, wherein at least one parameter of said device is configurable by a data unit connected thereto.

51. The device according to claim 43, wherein said device is at least in part housed within an outlet.

52. The device according to claim 43, further comprising a power connector coupled to said power supply and operative for powering a device connected thereto.

53. The device according to claim 43, wherein information carried by the digital data signal is used to control the power signal.

54. The device according to claim 53, wherein the control is one of:

on/off operation;

timing of operations; and

delayed start.

55. The device according to claim 54, wherein the data signal is used to monitor the power signal.

56. The device according to claim 43, wherein the power signal is a direct current signal.

57. The device according to claim 43, wherein said device is pluggable into an outlet or attachable to an outlet.

58. The device according to claim 43, wherein said single enclosure is mountable into an outlet cavity.

59. The device according to claim 43, wherein said single enclosure is structured to at least in part replace an existing outlet.

60. The device according to claim 43, wherein said telephone wire pair simultaneously carries a power signal, and said power port is connected to said telephone wire pair for feeding said power supply from the power signal carried over said telephone wire pair.

61. The device according to claim 43, wherein said analog unit is an analog actuator for creating a physical phenomenon, and said converter is a digital to analog converter.

62. The device according to claim 43, wherein the analog unit is an analog sensor for sensing a physical phenomenon, and said converter is an analog to digital converter.

63. The device according to claim 43, wherein the analog unit is one of an audio unit and a video unit and the analog signal is one of an audio signal and a video signal, respectively.

64. The device according to claim 43, wherein the analog unit is a telephone unit, said analog connector is a telephone connector and the analog signal is a telephone signal.

65. The device according to claim 43, wherein said analog connector is coupled to said power supply for powering a connected analog unit.

66. The device according to claim 43 further operative to provide a standard computer bus interface, said device further comprising a computer connector and mechanical means for connecting and attaching to a computer plug-in unit, said computer connector being coupled to said modem.

67. The device according to claim 66, wherein said standard computer bus interface is one of:

an ISA interface, a PCMCIA interface, an IDE interface, and a SCSI interface.

68. A device that is part of a local area network in a building for coupling a digital data signal to a data unit, the network including at least part of an existing telephone wire pair that is at least in part in walls of the building and is terminated by an outlet, the wire pair carrying a frequency multiplexed analog service signal and a digital data signal, said device comprising:

a telephone connector for connecting said device to the telephone wire pair;

a filter coupled to said telephone connector and having a data signal port operative to pass only the digital data signal;

a modem coupled to said data signal port for bi-directional digital data signal communication over the telephone wire pair;

a data port coupled to said modem and operative to effect full-duplex serial digital data communication;

a power port connectable to a power signal from a power signal source;

a power supply coupled between said power port and said modem for DC powering said modem from the power signal; and

a single enclosure housing said filter, said power supply, and said modem,

wherein said device is addressable in the local area network.

69. The device according to claim 68, wherein said device has an automatically assigned address.

70. The device according to claim 68, wherein said device has an address assigned by a data unit connected to said device.

71. The device according to claim 68, wherein said device is pluggable into an outlet or attachable to an outlet.

72. The device according to claim 68, wherein the telephone wire pair simultaneously carries a power signal, and said power port is connected to the telephone wire pair for feeding said power supply from the power signal carried over the telephone wire pair.

73. The device according to claim 68, further operative to couple an analog appliance to the analog service signal, said device further comprising an analog connector coupled to said telephone connector and connectable to the analog appliance.

74. The device according to claim 68, further operative to couple an analog unit to the digital data signal, said device further comprising an analog connector connectable to the analog unit for coupling an analog signal to the analog unit, and a converter between the analog and digital signals coupled between said analog connector and said modem.

75. The device according to claim 74, wherein the analog unit is an analog actuator for creating a physical phenomenon, and said converter is a digital to analog converter.

76. The device according to claim 74, wherein the analog unit is an analog sensor for sensing a physical phenomenon, and said converter is an analog to digital converter.

77. The device according to claim 74, wherein the analog unit is one of an audio unit and a video unit and the analog signal is one of an audio signal and a video signal.

78. The device according to claim 74, wherein the analog unit is a telephone unit, the analog connector is a telephone connector and the analog signal is a telephone signal.

79. The device according to claim 74, wherein the analog connector is coupled to said power supply and to the analog unit for powering the analog unit.

80. The device according to claim 68, wherein at least one parameter of said device is configurable by the data unit.

81. The device according to claim 68 further operative for coupling an analog telephone to a digitized telephone signal carried as part of said digital data signal, said device further comprising:

a telephone connector for coupling an analog telephone signal to the analog telephone set; and

a converter coupled between said telephone connector and said modem for converting between the digitized telephone signal and the analog telephone signal.

82. The device according to claim 68 further operative to provide a computer bus interface, said device further comprising a computer connector and mechanical means for connecting and attaching said computer connector to a computer plug-in unit, said computer connector being coupled to said modem.

83. The device according to claim 82 wherein said computer bus interface is one of:

ISA interface, a PCMCIA interface, an IDE interface, and a SCSI interface.

84. A device for coupling signals between first and second telephone wire pairs, each wire pair being connected to carry a respective bi-directional digital data signal, the first telephone wire pair being connected to carry a first bi-directional digital data signal in a first digital data frequency band, the second telephone wire pair being connected to carry a second bi-directional digital data signal in a second digital data frequency band, and both of said telephone wire pairs being connected to carry, multiplexed with each of the digital data signals, an analog telephone signal in an analog telephone signal frequency band lower than and distinct from each of the first and second digital data frequency bands, said device comprising:

a first connector for connecting to said first telephone wire pair;

a second connector for connecting to said second telephone wire pair;

a low pass filter coupled between said first and second connectors and operative for substantially passing only signals in the analog telephone signal frequency band for passing the analog telephone signal between the first and second telephone wire pairs;

a first high pass filter coupled to said first connector and operative for substantially passing only signals in the first digital data frequency band;

a first modem coupled to said first high pass filter for conducting the first bi-directional digital data signal over the first telephone wire pair;

a second high pass filter coupled to said second connector and operative for substantially passing only signals in the second digital data frequency band;

a second modem coupled to said second high pass filter for conducting the second bi-directional digital data signal over the second telephone wire pair;

a power port connectable to receive a power signal from a power signal source;

a power supply coupled between said power port and said first modem for DC powering said modem from the power signal; and

a single enclosure housing said filters, said power supply, said modems and said connectors, wherein;

said first and second modems are coupled to each other for passing digital data between said first and second telephone wire pairs; and

said device is addressable in a local area network.

85. The device according to claim 84, further operative for coupling to a data unit, said device further comprising:

a data connector for connecting to the data unit; and

a data transceiver coupled between said data connector and said first modem and operative to effect full-duplex serial digital data communication of the first bi-directional digital data signal with the data unit.

86. The device according to claim 85, wherein the digital data communication with the data unit is Ethernet based.

87. The device according to claim 84, further operative for coupling to an analog telephone set, the device further comprising:

an analog telephone connector for connecting to the analog telephone set;

a second low pass filter coupled between said first connector and said analog telephone connector and operative for substantially passing only signals in the analog telephone signal frequency band in order to pass the analog telephone signal between said first telephone wire pair and the analog telephone set.

88. The device according to claim 84, wherein said device has a manually assigned address.

89. The device according to claim 84, wherein said device has an automatically assigned address.

90. The device according to claim 84, wherein said device has an address assigned by a data unit connected to said device.

91. The device according to claim 84, wherein said device is at least in part housed within an outlet.

92. The device according to claim 84, further comprising a power connector coupled to said power supply and operative for supplying a power signal for powering an additional device connected to said power connector.

93. The device according to claim 92, wherein information carried by one of the digital data signals is used to control the power signal.

94. The device according to claim 93, wherein the control of the power signal is one of:

on/off operation;

timing of operations; and

a delayed start.

95. The device according to claim 92, wherein the one of the data signals is used to monitor the power signal.

96. The device according to claim 92, wherein the power signal is a direct current signal.

97. The device according to claim 84, wherein said device is pluggable into an outlet or attachable to an outlet.

98. The device according to claim 84, wherein said single enclosure is wall mountable, or mountable into an outlet opening, or structured to at least in part replace an existing outlet.

99. The device according to claim 84, wherein the first telephone wire pair simultaneously carries a power signal, and said power port is connected to the first connector for feeding said power supply from the power signal carried over the first telephone wire pair.

100. The device according to claim 84, further operative to couple the first digital data signal to an analog unit, said device further comprising an analog connector connectable to the analog unit for coupling an analog signal to the analog unit, and a converter between the analog and digital signals coupled between said analog connector and said first modem.

101. The device according to claim 100, wherein the analog unit is an analog actuator for creating a physical phenomenon, and said converter is a digital to analog converter.

102. The device according to claim 100, wherein the analog unit is an analog sensor for sensing a physical phenomenon, and said converter is an analog to digital converter.

103. The device according to claim 100, wherein the analog unit is one of an audio unit and a video unit and the analog signal is one of an audio signal and a video signal, respectively.

104. The device according to claim 100, wherein the analog unit is an analog telephone unit, the analog connector is a telephone connector and the analog signal is a telephone signal.

105. The device according to claim 100, wherein the analog connector is coupled to said power supply and to the analog unit for powering the analog unit.

106. The device according to claim 100, wherein at least one parameter of said device is configurable by a data unit connected thereto.

107. The device according to claim 84, said device further comprising a computer connector and mechanical means cooperatively forming a standard computer bus interface for connecting and attaching said computer connector to a computer plug-in unit, said computer connector being coupled to said first modem.

108. The device according to claim 107, wherein said computer bus interface is one of:

an ISA interface, a PCMCIA interface, an IDE interface, and a SCSI interface.

109. The device according to claim 84, wherein at least one out of said first and second modems is a local area network modem operative for point-to-point, packet-based, half-duplex communication with only a single additional mating modem over the wiring.

110. The device according to claim 84, wherein at least one out of said first and second modems is operative for point-to-point full-duplex communication.

111. The device according to claim 84, wherein at least one of said first and second modems is a DSL modem.

112. The device according to claim 84, wherein at least one of said first and second modems is operative for bi-directional digital data signal communication with one or more additional modems of the same type as said one of said first and second modems over the respective telephone wire pair.

113. The device according to claim 84, wherein said single enclosure is constructed to have at least one of the following:

a form substantially similar to that of a standard outlet;

wall mounting elements substantially similar to those of a standard wall outlet;

a shape allowing direct mounting in an outlet opening or cavity; and

a form to at least in part substitute for a standard outlet.

114. The device according to claim 84, further operative for coupling a digitized telephone signal carried as part of the first digital data signal to an analog telephone set, said device further comprising:

a telephone connector for coupling a second analog telephone signal to the analog telephone set; and

a converter coupled between said telephone connector and said first modem for converting between the digitized telephone signal and the second analog telephone signal.

The device according to claim 84, wherein said device is connectable to one of said first and second telephone wire pairs or to a further telephone wire pair connected to carry a power signal and said power port is coupled to the telephone wire pair for feeding said power supply from the power signal carried over the telephone wire pair.

116. A network for respectively coupling first and second bi-directional serial digital data signals to first and second data units and for coupling an analog telephone signal to a telephone set, the network comprising:

a first telephone wire pair comprising two conductors and connected for carrying the analog telephone signal in a telephone signal frequency band frequency multiplexed with the first bi-directional digital data signal in a first digital data frequency band that is distinct from, and higher than, the analog telephone signal frequency band;

a second telephone wire pair distinct from said first telephone wire pair and comprising two conductors and connected for carrying the analog telephone signal telephone signal frequency multiplexed with the second bi-directional second digital data signal in second digital data frequency band that is distinct from and above the analog telephone signal frequency band;

a first device enclosed in a first single enclosure and connected between said first and second telephone wire pairs, said first device being operative to transparently pass signals in the analog telephone frequency band and pass digital data between said first and second telephone wire pairs, said first device further comprising a port couplable to a first data unit for coupling the first and second bi-directional digital data signals to the first data unit; and

a second device enclosed in a second single enclosure connected to second telephone wire pair, said second device comprising a telephone connector connectable to an analog telephone set for coupling the analog telephone signal to the analog telephone set, said second device further comprising a port couplable to a second data unit for coupling the second data unit to the second bi-directional digital data signal;

wherein each of said first and second devices is addressable as part of the network.

117. The network according to claim 116, wherein said first device comprises a telephone connector connectable to a second analog telephone set for coupling the analog telephone signal to the second analog telephone set.

118. The network according to claim 116, wherein said first and second devices are connected to each other in a point-to-point connection by said second telephone wire pair.

119. The network according to claim 116, wherein the first and second bi-directional digital data signals are at least in part independent of each other or distinct from each other.

120. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least part of at least one of said first and second telephone wire pairs is pre-existing telephone wiring in walls of a building.

121. The network according to claim 120, wherein at least one of said first and second devices is connected to at least one of said first and second telephone wire pairs via a telephone outlet.

122. The network according to claim 120, wherein at least one of said first and second devices is integrated into the outlet connected thereto.

123. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least part of at least one of said first and second telephone wire pairs is outside of a building.

124. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said first and second devices has a manually assigned address.

125. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said first and second devices has an automatically assigned address.

126. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said first and second devices has an address assigned by a data unit connected to said one of said first and second devices.

127. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said first and second devices further comprises a power connector operative for supplying a power signal for powering a further device connected thereto.

128. The network according to claim 127, wherein information carried by one of the first and second digital data signals is used to control the power signal.

129. The network according to claim 128, wherein the control is one of:

on/off operation;

timing of operations; and

delayed start.

130. The network according to claim 127, wherein the one of the first and second digital data signals is used to monitor the power signal.

131. The network according to claim 127, wherein the power signal is a direct current signal.

132. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said first and second devices is pluggable into an outlet, or is attachable to an outlet, or is wall mountable, or is mountable into an outlet opening.

133. The network according to claim 116, wherein the coupling between said first device and the first data unit is based on point-to-point full-duplex communication.

134. The network according to claim 133, wherein the digital data communication with the first data unit is Ethernet based.

135. The network according to claim 116, wherein the coupling between said second device and the second data unit is based on point-to-point full-duplex communication.

136. The network according to claim 135, wherein the digital data communication with the second data unit is Ethernet based.

137. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of the first and second bi-directional digital data signals is DSL based.

138. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said first and second devices is further operative to couple an analog unit to the first digital data signal, and said network further comprises:

an analog connector connectable to the analog unit for coupling an analog signal to the analog unit; and

a converter between analog and digital signals coupled to said analog connector for converting between one of the first and second bi-directional digital data signals and the analog signal.

139. The network according to claim 138, wherein the analog unit is an analog actuator for creating a physical phenomenon, and said converter is a digital to analog converter.

140. The network according to claim 138, wherein the analog unit is an analog sensor for sensing a physical phenomenon, and said converter is an analog to digital converter.

141. The network according to claim 138, wherein the analog unit is one of an audio unit and a video unit and the analog signal is one of an audio signal and a video signal, respectively.

142. The network according to claim 138, wherein the network further comprises a power supply and the analog connector is coupled to said power supply and to the analog unit for powering the analog unit.

143. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one parameter of at least one of said first and second devices is configurable by a data unit connected said at least one of said first and second devices.

144. The network according to claim 116, wherein at least one of said single enclosures is constructed to have at least one of the following:

a form substantially similar to that of a standard outlet;

wall mounting elements substantially similar to those of a standard wall outlet;

a shape allowing direct mounting in an outlet opening or cavity; and

a form to at least in part substitute for a standard outlet.

145. A device for coupling digital data between first and second telephone wire pairs, each telephone wire pair being connected for carrying an analog telephone signal frequency multiplexed with a bi-directional digital data signal, wherein, the digital data signal carried in each telephone wire pair is in a digital data frequency band and the analog telephone signal carried in each telephone wire pair is in an analog telephone signal frequency band lower than, and distinct, from the digital data frequency band of the digital data signal carried in the same telephone wire pair, said device comprising:

a first connector for connecting to the first telephone wire pair;

a second connector for connecting to the second telephone wire pair;

a first high pass filter coupled between said first and second connectors and operative for substantially passing only signals in the digital data frequency bands and for substantially stopping signals in the analog telephone signal frequency bands, for passing digital data signals between the first and second telephone wire pairs; and

a single enclosure housing said first high pass filter and said connectors.

146. The device according to claim 145, further operative for coupling analog telephone signals between the first and second telephone wire pairs, said device further comprising a low pass filter coupled between said first and second connectors and operative for substantially passing only signals in the analog telephone signal frequency bands and for substantially stopping signals in the digital data frequency bands, for passing the analog telephone signals between the first and second telephone wire pairs.

147. The device according to claim 145, further operative for coupling the digital data signal over the first telephone wire pair to a data unit, said device further comprising:

a data connector for connecting to the data unit; and

a second high pass filter coupled between said first

connector and said data connector and operative for substantially passing only signals in the digital data frequency bands and for substantially stopping said analog telephone signal frequency bands.

148. The device according to claim 145, further operative to be coupled to an analog telephone, said device further comprising:

an analog telephone connector for connecting to the analog telephone; and

a low pass filter coupled between said first connector and said analog telephone connector and operative for substantially passing only signals in the analog telephone signal frequency band associated with the first wire pair and for substantially stopping signals in the digital data frequency band associated with the first wire pair.

149. The device according to claim 145, wherein said device is at least in part housed within an outlet, or is pluggable into an outlet, or is attachable to an outlet.

150. The device according to claim 145, wherein said single enclosure is:

wall mountable;

or mountable into an outlet opening;

or structured to at least in part replace an existing outlet.

151. The device according to claim 145, wherein said single enclosure is constructed to have at least one of the following:

a form substantially similar to that of a standard outlet;

wall mounting elements substantially similar to those of a standard wall outlet;

a shape allowing direct mounting in an outlet opening or cavity; and

a form to at least in part substitute for a standard outlet.

152. A device for passing, digital data between a first bi-directional digital data signal in a first digital data frequency band and a second bi-directional digital data signal in a second digital data frequency band, the first and second digital data frequency bands each being higher than, and distinct from, an analog telephone signal frequency band, and wherein at least said first bi-directional digital data signal is carried over a telephone wire pair, said device comprising:

a first port for coupling to the first digital data signal;

a second port for coupling to the second digital data signal;

a first filter coupled to said first port and operative for substantially passing only signals in the first digital data frequency band and for substantially stopping signals in the analog telephone signal frequency band;

a first modem coupled to said first filter for conducting the first bi-directional digital data signal in the first digital data frequency band;

a second filter coupled to said second port and operative for substantially passing only signals in the second digital data frequency band and for substantially stopping signals in said analog telephone signal frequency band;

a second modem coupled to said second filter for conducting the second bi-directional digital data signal in the second digital data frequency band; and

a single enclosure housing said filters, said modems and said ports,

wherein said first and second modems are coupled to each other for passing digital data between said first and second ports, and wherein at least one out of said first and second filters is a high pass filter; and

wherein said device is addressable in a local area network.

153. The device according to claim 152, further operative for coupling to a data unit, said device further comprising:

a data connector for connecting to the data unit; and

a data transceiver coupled between said data connector and said first modem and operative to effect full-duplex serial digital data communication with the data unit, for coupling the first bi-directional digital data signal to the data unit.

154. The device according to claim 153, wherein the digital data communication with the data unit is Ethernet based.

155. The device according to claim 152 wherein said telephone wire pair is connected for concurrently carrying an analog telephone signal in the analog telephone signal frequency band, said device being further operative for coupling to an analog telephone, said device further comprising:

an analog telephone connector for connecting to the analog telephone; and

a low pass filter coupled between said first port and said analog telephone connector and operative for substantially passing only signals in the analog telephone signal frequency band.

156. The device according to claim 152, wherein said device has a manually assigned address.

157. The device according to claim 152, wherein said device has an automatically assigned address.

158. The device according to claim 152, wherein said device has an address assigned by a data unit connected to said device.

159. The device according to claim 152, wherein said device is at least in part housed within an outlet.

160. The device according to claim 152, wherein said device is pluggable into an outlet or attachable to an outlet.

161. The device according to claim 152, wherein said single enclosure is:

wall mountable;

or mountable into an outlet opening;

or structured to at least in part replace an existing outlet.

162. The device according to claim 152, wherein at least one of said first and second modems is a local area network modem operative for point-to-point packet-based half-duplex communication with only a single mating modem over a telephone wire pair.

163. The device according to claim 152, wherein at least one said first and second modems is operative for point-to-point full-duplex communication.

164. The device according to claim 152, wherein at least one of said first and second modems is a DSL modem.

165. The device according to claim 152, wherein at least one of said first and second modems is operative for bi-directional digital data signal communication with one or more additional modems of the same type as said one of said first and second modems over a telephone wire pair.

166. The device according to claim 152, wherein said single enclosure is constructed to have at least one of the following:

a form substantially similar to that of a standard outlet;

wall mounting elements substantially similar to those of a standard wall outlet;

a shape allowing direct mounting in an outlet opening or cavity; and

a form to at least in part substitute for a standard outlet.

167. The device according to claim 152, further operative for coupling a digitized telephone signal carried as part of said first digital data signal to an analog telephone, said device further comprising:

a telephone connector for coupling a second analog telephone signal to the analog telephone; and

a converter coupled between said telephone connector and said first modem for converting between the digitized telephone signal and the second analog telephone signal.
