Abstract

A pulse oximeter sensor having an emitter(s) and a detector, with a layer having a first portion of the emitter and a second portion of layer over the detector is provided. A barrier is included between the first and second portions of the overlying layer to substantially block radiation of the wavelengths emitted by the emitter(s). Preferably, the barrier reduces the radiation shunted to less than 10% of the radiation detected, and more preferably to less than 1% of the radiation detected.

Claims

1. A sensor comprising:

at least one emitter;

a detector; and

a substrate comprising one or more layers under or over the emitter and the detector, the substrate layer having at least one removed portion between the emitter and the detector that extends less than an entire width of the substrate, wherein the removed portion disrupts transmission of light emitted by the emitter, such that less than 10% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

2. The sensor defined in claim 1 wherein remaining portions of the substrate that are next to the removed portion have a bending shape that reduces shunted light reaching the detector.

3. The sensor defined in claim 1 wherein remaining portions of the substrate that are next to the removed portion have curved edges that reduce shunted light reaching the detector.

4. The sensor defined in claim 1 wherein the removed portion disrupts transmission of light emitted by the emitter, such that less than 1% of light detected by the detector is shunted light.

5. A sensor comprising:

at least one emitter;

a detector; and

a layer under or over the emitter and the detector, the layer having a width and a break between the emitter and the detector that is less than the width of the layer, wherein the break disrupts light of wavelengths emitted by the emitter, such that less than 10% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

6. The sensor according to claim 5 wherein the light emitted by the emitter is infrared light.

7. The sensor according to claim 5 wherein the light emitted by the emitter is red light.

8. The sensor defined in claim 5 wherein the break disrupts transmission of light emitted by the emitter, such that less than 1% of light detected by the detector is shunted light.

9. A sensor comprising:

at least one emitter;

a detector; and

a layer under or over the emitter and the detector, wherein the layer has at least one hole between the emitter and the detector that attenuates light of wavelengths emitted by the emitter, such that less than 10% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

10. The sensor defined in claim 9 wherein the layer has a plurality of holes between the emitter and the detector.

11. The sensor defined in claim 9 wherein the light emitted by the emitter is infrared light.

12. The sensor defined in claim 9 wherein the light emitted by the emitter is red light.

13. A sensor comprising:

at least one emitter;

a detector;

a substrate;

a layer covering the substrate;

a light absorbing material, at least a portion of the light absorbing material lying between the emitter and the detector; and

an adhesive layer that is capable of transmitting light emitted by the emitter, wherein the light absorbing material attenuates light of wavelengths emitted by the emitter through the adhesive layer such that less than 10% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

14. The sensor of claim 13 wherein the light absorbing material surrounds the detector.

15. The sensor of claim 14 wherein the light absorbing material is colored to reduce shunting of the light.

16. The sensor defined in claim 13 wherein the light absorbing material attenuates light of wavelengths emitted by the emitter through the adhesive layer such that less than 1% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

17. A sensor comprising:

at least one emitter;

a detector;

a plurality of layers that are capable of transmitting light emitted by the emitter; and

a shunt blocking material having a portion that lies between the emitter and the detector;

wherein the shunt blocking material blocks light emitted by the emitter that passes through one or more of the plurality of additional layers, such that less than 10% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

18. The sensor defined in claim 17 wherein the layers include an adhesive layer.

19. The sensor defined in claim 17 wherein the layers include a substrate layer.

20. The sensor defined in claim 17 wherein the shunt blocking material blocks light emitted by the emitter that passes through one or more of the plurality of additional layers, such that less than 1% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.
