1. A method for automatically optimizing parameter selection in a communication system having one or more channels for transmitting and receiving signals comprising the steps of:
- a. receiving a signal from a channel;
b. characterizing impairments in the channel while gathering channel statistics using the received signal;
c. analyzing the impairments using one or more of time domain and frequency domain analysis of the signal;
d. generating recommendations for parameter modifications using analysis of the impairments and out-of-band information, to improve transmission performance on the channel;
e. modifying the parameters based on the recommendations.

A method is provided for automatically optimizing parameter selection in a communication system having one or more channels for transmitting and receiving signals by the steps of: receiving a signal from a channel; characterizing impairments in the channel while gathering statistics using the received signal; analyzing the impairments to obtain recommendations for parameter modifications for improved performance; and modifying the parameters based on the recommendations. 4. A system for automatically optimizing parameter selection in a communication system having one or more channels for transmitting and receiving signals comprising:

a. one or more low level analysis modules coupled to the channels for characterizing impairments in the channels using one or more of time domain and frequency domain analysis of signals; and b. one or more high level analysis modules having inputs coupled to the low level analysis modules and for receiving out-of-band information, and outputs coupled to the communication system for analyzing the impairments to determine recommendations for parameter modifications for improved performance. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6, 7, 8)
