Abstract

A software application for enabling creation and execution of an automated browser navigation sequence is provided. The software application comprises a session recording module for recording parameters associated with a manual navigation sequence, a file creation module for converting data of a manual session into data comprising an executable sequence of instructions for conducting an automated navigation sequence, and an application-program-interface module for integrating a functional capability with the automated navigation sequence. The automated navigation sequence is characterized in that a completely automated browser-navigation sequence performed by the browser application is enabled through execution of the executable instruction sequence created from the recorded parameters of the manual navigation sequence.

Claims

1. A system for creating and executing an automated Web browser navigation and data collection sequence comprising:

a session recording mechanism operable by a first user for recording user Web navigation and interaction activity required for data collection associated with a manual navigation and interaction sequence comprising a plurality of web sites;

a log-in mechanism for storing log-in information of one or more second users for individual ones of the plurality of web sites visited in the manual sequence; and

a file creation module for converting operations recorded in the manual sequence of the first user into an executable sequence of instructions for conducting an automated sequence;

wherein the system follows the manual sequence, creates the automated sequence, and performs the automated sequence on behalf of the second user, including logging in to individual one of the sites on behalf of the second user using the log-in information of the second user, and storing and aggregating data collected in the automated sequence and transmitting the aggregated data to the second user.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the file-creation module includes a function for creating an executable icon for launching the automated sequence.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the executable sequence of instructions are XML instructions.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the automated sequence includes automation of any one of form-population, data-downloading, media-interaction, data-searching, and hyper-lining.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the application is implemented as a browser plug-in containing a user-configuration tool.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the automated sequence is created as a result of manual user programming instead of recording a manual sequence.

7. A method for automating Web browser navigation and data collection, comprising the steps of:

recording user Web navigation and interaction activity for data collection, via a session recording mechanism, wherein the recording is associated with a manual navigation and interaction sequence of a first user comprising a plurality of web sites;

storing user-entered log-in information of one or more second users for individual ones of the plurality of web sites visited in the manual sequence of the first user via a log-in mechanism;

converting operations recorded in the manual sequence of the first user into an executable sequence of instructions for conducting an automated sequence via a file creation module;

performing the automated sequence on behalf of the one or more second users, including logging into to individual ones of the web sites on behalf of the second user, and storing and aggregating data collected in the automated sequence; and

transmitting the aggregated data to the one or more second users.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the file-creation module creates an executable icon for launching the automated sequence.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the executable sequence of instructions are XML instructions.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the automated sequence includes automation of any one of form-population, data-downloading, media-interaction, data-searching, and hyper-linking.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein the application is implemented as a browser plug-in containing a user-configuration tool.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein the automated sequence is created as a result of manual user programming instead of recording a manual sequence.
