- a. a stator having a back iron portion and at least two pole portions on which field coils are disposed, each pole portion having a neck and opposed pole tips extending circumferentially from a radially inner side of the neck, the neck and opposed pole tips having opposed axial ends, the neck and opposed cole tips having circumferential width that for each axial end gradually decreases from a point axially inwardly spaced from an outermost point of that axial end to that outermost point; and
b. an armature disposed in the stator.

An electric motor, power tool using the electric motor, and method of making the electric motor includes making a stator that includes pole portions that have axially opposed ends that gradually decrease in width. The pole portions may also have dovetail features that are received in corresponding recesses of the back iron portion.
