System for fluid retention management
First Claim
1. A system for fluid management of a patient, comprising:
- a first inflow container for storing fluid introduced into the patient;
a pump coupled to the first inflow container for assisting fluid from the first inflow container into the patient;
an outflow container for storing fluid collected from the patient;
a first weighing device that weighs fluid in the first inflow container;
a second weighing device that weighs fluid in the outflow container;
a processor electrically coupled to the first and second weighing devices, the processor receiving input data from the first and second weighing devices representing the weights of the inflow and outflow containers respectively;
an input device electrically coupled to the processor for inputting to the processor a specific gravity of the fluid; and
a display device for displaying output data from the processor, wherein the processor continuously calculates, using the inputted weights of the inflow and outflow containers and the inputted fluid specific gravity, the difference in fluid volume between the inflow and outflow containers, and wherein said volume is displayed on the display device.

Abstract
The present invention provides a fluid retention management system that records and displays fluid retention of a patient based on the weight of fluid entering and exiting the patient'"'"'s body. Scales or other weighing devices are used to weigh the fluid entering and exiting the body so that the corresponding fluid volume may be calculated. The system automatically detects when a fluid container is being replaced. The fluid deficit of the patient is calculated according to the difference between the fluid volume entering the patient and the fluid volume exiting the patient. An operator is able to enter the specific gravity of the fluid and a fluid deficit alarm threshold. If the fluid deficit exceeds the alarm threshold, audible and visual alarms are generated.
