Abstract

In one embodiment, a processor comprises one or more registers and a control unit. The registers are configured to store interrupt state describing a virtual interrupt. The control unit is configured to initiate the virtual interrupt responsive to the interrupt state. In another embodiment, a method comprises storing an interrupt state describing a virtual interrupt in a storage area allocated to a guest. A processor initiates the virtual interrupt subsequent to initiating execution of the guest, responsive to the interrupt state. In still another embodiment, a computer accessible medium stores a plurality of instructions comprising instructions which, when executed on a processor in response to a physical interrupt: determine a guest into which a virtual interrupt corresponding to the physical interrupt is to be injected; and store an interrupt state describing the virtual interrupt in a storage area allocated to the guest.

Claims

1. A processor comprising:

one or more registers configured to store interrupt state describing a virtual interrupt to be taken by the processor during execution of a guest; and

a control unit coupled to the one or more registers, wherein the control unit is configured to initiate the virtual interrupt responsive to the interrupt state.

2. The processor as recited in claim 1 wherein the interrupt state comprises a virtual interrupt request indicative, in a first state, that the virtual interrupt is requested.

3. The processor as recited in claim 2 wherein the interrupt state further comprises an interrupt vector for the virtual interrupt.

4. The processor as recited in claim 3 wherein the interrupt state further comprises a priority for the virtual interrupt.

5. The processor as recited in claim 1 wherein the one or more registers are further configured to store a virtual task priority that is programmable by the guest.

6. The processor as recited in claim 1 wherein the interrupt state is loaded into the one or more registers, during use, from a memory storage area allocated to the guest.

7. The processor as recited in claim 6 wherein the memory storage area also stores a plurality of indications identifying events that are to be intercepted during execution of the guest on the processor.

8. The processor as recited in claim 7 wherein the plurality of indications include an indication of whether or not interrupts are to be intercepted.

9. The processor as recited in claim 7 wherein the plurality of indications include an indication of whether or not end of interrupt commands are to be intercepted.

10. The processor as recited in claim 6 wherein the interrupt state includes an indication of whether or not interrupt masking is virtualized.

11. The processor as recited in claim 1 wherein the one or more registers are further configured to store a first flag that enables virtual interrupts in the processor.

12. The processor as recited in claim 11 wherein the one or more registers are further configured to store a second flag that enables physical interrupts, and wherein the second flag is inaccessible to the guest if interrupt masking is virtualized in the processor.

13. A method comprising:

storing an interrupt state describing a virtual interrupt to be taken by a guest in a storage area allocated to the guest; and

a processor initiating the virtual interrupt subsequent to initiating execution of the guest, initiating the virtual interrupt responsive to the interrupt state.

14. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the interrupt state comprises a virtual interrupt request indicative, in a first state, that the virtual interrupt is requested.

15. The method as recited in claim 14 wherein the interrupt state further comprises an interrupt vector for the virtual interrupt.

16. The method as recited in claim 15 wherein the interrupt state further comprises a priority for the virtual interrupt.

17. The method as recited in claim 13 further comprising storing a virtual task priority that is programmable by the guest.

18. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein initiating execution of the guest comprises loading the interrupt state into the processor from the storage area.

19. The method as recited in claim 18 wherein the storage area also stores a plurality of indications identifying events that are to be intercepted during execution of the guest on the processor.

20. The method as recited in claim 19 wherein the plurality of indications include an indication of whether or not interrupts are to be intercepted.

21. The method as recited in claim 19 wherein the plurality of indications include an indication of whether or not end of interrupt commands are to be intercepted.

22. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the interrupt state includes an indication of whether or not interrupt masking is virtualized.

23. A computer accessible medium storing a plurality of instructions comprising instructions which, when executed on a processor in response to a physical interrupt:

determine a guest into which a virtual interrupt corresponding to the physical interrupt is to be injected; and

store an interrupt state describing the virtual interrupt in a storage area allocated to the guest, whereby the processor takes the virtual interrupt, during use, responsive to the guest'"'"'s execution on the processor.

24. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 23 wherein the interrupt state comprises a virtual interrupt request indicative, in a first state, that the virtual interrupt is requested.

25. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 24 wherein the interrupt state further comprises an interrupt vector for the virtual interrupt.

26. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 25 wherein the interrupt state further comprises a priority for the virtual interrupt.

27. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 23 wherein the instructions, when executed, store a virtual task priority that is programmable by the guest.

28. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 23 wherein the storage area also stores a plurality of indications identifying events that are to be intercepted during execution of the guest on the processor.

29. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 28 wherein the plurality of indications include an indication of whether or not interrupts are to be intercepted.

30. The computer accessible medium as recited in claim 28 wherein the plurality of indications include an indication of whether or not end of interrupt commands are to be intercepted.
