Method for adjusting channel interference between access points in a wireless network
First Claim
1. A method for use by a first access point capable of communicating in a wireless communications network via a radio frequency channel, the method comprising the steps of:
- obtaining data indicative of distance to a mobile terminal device that is associated with the first access point on the radio frequency channel;
detecting that a second access point is also using the radio frequency channel; and
adjusting transmit power as a function of distance to the second access point and distance to the mobile terminal device such that;
if the second access point is nearer to the first access point than the mobile terminal device, setting transmit power based on distance to the mobile terminal device; and
if the second access point is not nearer to the first access point than the mobile terminal device, setting transmit power based on distance to the second access point.

Abstract
The performance and ease of management of wireless communications environments is improved by a mechanism that enables access points (APs) to perform automatic channel selection. A wireless network can therefore include multiple APs, each of which will automatically choose a channel such that channel usage is optimized. Furthermore, APs can perform automatic power adjustment so that multiple APs can operate on the same channel while minimizing interference with each other. Wireless stations are load balanced across APs so that user bandwidth is optimized. A movement detection scheme provides seamless roaming of stations between APs.
