Abstract

A method and system for enabling user interaction with computer software running in a computer system via an interface surface and a sensing device. The interface surface contains information relating to the computer software and coded data indicative of a text field. When placed in an operative position relative to the interface surface, the sensing device senses indicating data indicative of the text field and generates movement data indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s movement relative to the interface surface. The indicating data and movement data are received in the computer system and the text field is identified from the indicating data. The computer software is operated at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the text field.

Claims

1. A method of enabling user interaction with computer software running in a computer system via:

an interface surface containing information relating to the computer software and including coded data indicative of a text field, the interface surface having disposed thereon position elements; and

a sensing device comprising;

(a) an image sensor adapted to capture images of at least some of the coded data when the sensing device is placed in an operative position relative to the surface, the sensing device being configured to periodically sense position elements when the sensing device is used to write handwritten user input onto the interface surface; and

(b) a processor adapted to;

(i) identify at least some of the coded data from one or more of the captured images;

(ii) determine an orientation, within the captured images, of at least some of the coded data;

(iii) decode at least some of the coded data; and

(iv) generate, using at least some of the decoded coded data;

(A) indicating data indicative of the text field; and

(B) movement data being indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s movement relative to the interface surface, wherein the movement data is in the form of a locus of the sensing device in relation to the surface by ascertaining relative displacement of the sensing device over time with respect to at least one of the position elements disposed on the interface surface;

the method including the steps ot in the computer system;

(a) receiving the indicating data from the sensing device;

(b) receiving the movement data from the sensing device;

(c) identifying the text field from the indicating data; and

(d) operating the computer software at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the text field.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the processor is housed within the sensing device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the processor is adapted to operate at processing speeds ranging from 1 instruction per second to 1×

10¹² instructions per second.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the processor is adapted to operate at processing speeds ranging from 10 instructions per second to 1×

10⁶ instructions per second.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the image sensor is housed within the sensing device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the image sensor is adapted to capture images at rates ranging from 1 image per second to 1,000 images per second.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the image sensor is adapted to capture images at rates ranging from 10 images per second to 200 images per second.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the coded data comprises non-barcode coded data.

9. The method according to claim 1, the method further including the steps of, in the computer system, performing text recognition on the handwritten user input, thereby to generate computer text.

10. The method according to claim 1, including the step of sending, in the computer system, data to the computer software indicative of at least the text field.

11. The method according to claim 1, wherein the text field is associated with a visible text zone defined on the interface surface.

12. The method according to claim 1, wherein the sensing device'"'"'s processor is adapted to generate, using at least some of the coded data, position data indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s position relative to the interface surface, wherein the method includes:

receiving the position data from the sensing device;

operating the computer software at least partly in reliance on the position data.

13. A system for enabling user interaction with computer software running in a computer system via:

an interface surface containing information relating to the computer software and including coded data indicative of a text field, the interface surface having disposed thereon position elements; and

a sensing device comprising;

(a) an image sensor adapted to capture images of at least some of the coded data when the sensing device is placed in an operative position relative to the surface the sensing device being configured to periodically sense position elements when the sensing device is used to write handwritten user input onto the interface surface; and

(b) a processor adapted to;

(i) identify at least some of the coded data from one or more of the captured images;

(ii) determine an orientation, within the captured images, of at least some of the coded data;

(iii) decode at least some of the coded data; and

(iv) generate, using at least some of the decoded coded data;

(A) indicating data indicative of the text field; and

(B) movement data being indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s movement relative to the interface surface, wherein the movement data is in the form of a locus of the sensing device in relation to the surface by ascertaining relative displacement of the sensing device over time with respect to at least one of the position elements disposed on the interface surface;

the computer system being configured to;

(a) receive the indicating data from the sensing device;

(b) receive the movement data from the sensing device;

(c) identify the text field from the indicating data; and

(d) operate the computer software at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the text field.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the processor is housed within the sensing device.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the processor is adapted to operate at processing speeds ranging from 1 instruction per second to 1×

10¹² instructions per second.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the processor is adapted to operate at processing speeds ranging from 10 instructions per second to 1×

10⁶ instructions per second.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein the image sensor is housed within the sensing device.

18. The system of claim 13, wherein the image sensor is adapted to capture images at rates ranging from 1 image per second to 1,000 images per second.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the image sensor is adapted to capture images at rates ranging from 10 images per second to 200 images per second.

20. The system of claim 13, wherein the coded data comprises non-barcode coded data.

21. The system according to claim 13, wherein the computer system is configured to perform text recognition on the handwritten user input, thereby to generate computer text.

22. The system according to claim 13, wherein the computer system is configured to send data to the computer software indicative of at least the text field.

23. The system according to claim 13, wherein the text field is associated with a visible text zone defined on the interface surface.

24. The system according to claim 13, wherein the sensing device'"'"'s processor is adapted to generate, using at least some of the coded data, position data indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s position relative to the interface surface, wherein the computer system is configured to:

receive the position data from the sensing device;

operate the computer software at least partly in reliance on the position data.

25. A system for enabling user interaction with computer software running in a computer system, the system including:

an interface surface containing information relating to the computer software and including coded data indicative of a text field relating to the computer software, the interface surface having disposed thereon position elements;

the system being configured to, in the computer system;

(a) receive indicating data from a sensing device, the indicating data being indicative of the text field;

(b) receive movement data from the sensing device, the movement data being indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s movement relative to the interface surface, wherein the movement data is in the form of a locus of the sensing device in relation to the surface by ascertaining relative displacement of the sensing device over time with respect to at least one of the position elements disposed on the interface surface;

(c) identify the text field on the basis of the indicating data; and

(d) operate the computer software at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the text field,

wherein the sensing device comprises;

(a) an image sensor adapted to capture images of at least some of the coded data when the sensing device is placed in an operative position relative to the surface, the sensing device being configured to periodically sense position elements when the sensing device is used to write handwritten user input onto the interface surface; and

(b) a processor adapted to;

(i) identify at least some of the coded data from one or more of the captured images;

(ii) determine an orientation, within the captured images, of at least some of the coded data;

(iii) decode at least some of the coded data; and

(iv) generate the indicating data and at least one of the movement data and the position data, using at least some of the decoded coded data.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the processor is housed within the sensing device.

27. The system of claim 25, wherein the processor is adapted to operate at processing speeds ranging from 1 instruction per second to 1×

10¹² instructions per second.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the proeessor is adapted to operate at processing speeds ranging from 10 instructions per second to 1×

10⁶ instructions per second.

29. The system of claim 25, wherein the image sensor is housed within the sensing device.

30. The system of claim 25, wherein the image sensor is adapted to capture images at rates ranging from 1 image per second to 1,000 images per second.

31. The system of claim 30 wherein the image sensor is adapted to capture images at rates ranging from 10 images per second to 200 images per second.

32. The system of claim 25, wherein the coded data comprises non-barcode coded data.

33. The system according to claim 25, the computer system being configured to perform text recognition on the handwritten user input, thereby to generate computer text.

34. The system according to claim 25, the computer system being configured to send data to the computer software indicative of at least the text field.

35. The system according to claim 25, wherein the text field is associated with a visible text zone defined on the interface surface.

36. The system according to claim 25, wherein the sensing device'"'"'s processor is adapted to generate, using at least some of the coded data, position data indicative of the sensing device'"'"'s position relative to the interface surface, wherein the computer system is configured to:

receive the position data from the sensing device;

operate the computer software at least partly in reliance on the position data.
