Program for associating access points with stations in a wireless network
First Claim
1. A program product in an access point in a wireless communications environment including multiple access points and stations, wherein stations gain network access by associating with one or more of the access points, the program product comprising a computer storage readable medium having embodied therein a computer program for storing data, the computer program comprising:
- logic for collecting messages from stations, each message being a request from one station to associate with the access point and including at least one parameter;
logic for evaluating the parameters to produce an evaluation;
logic for selecting one of the stations based at least in-part on the evaluation; and
logic for prompting the selected station to become associated with the access point in order to gain network access via the access point.

Abstract
The performance and ease of management of wireless communications environments is improved by a mechanism that enables access points (APs) to perform automatic channel selection. A wireless network can therefore include multiple APs, each of which will automatically choose a channel such that channel usage is optimized. Furthermore, APs can perform automatic power adjustment so that multiple APs can operate on the same channel while minimizing interference with each other. Wireless stations are load balanced across APs so that user bandwidth is optimized. A movement detection scheme provides seamless roaming of stations between APs.

6. A program product in an access point in a wireless communications environment including multiple access points and stations, wherein stations gain network access by associating with one or more of the access points, the program product comprising a computer storage readable medium having embodied therein a computer program for storing data, the computer program comprising:
-
logic for collecting messages from stations, each message being a request from one station to associate with the access point and including at least one parameter indicative of distance between the station and the access point; logic for keeping track of at least one parameter related to stations in the network, that is not included in the messages, including a parameter indicative of the number of stations associated with the access point, logic for evaluating one or more the parameters to produce an evaluation; logic for selecting one of the stations based at least in-part on the evaluation; and logic for prompting the selected station to become associated with the access point based upon the evaluation in order to gain network access via the access point.
