1. A powered surgical handpiece comprising:

  • a housing having a distal end defining a non-rotatable accessory coupling arrangement, said distal end having an accessory opening dimensioned to receive a proximal end of a cutting accessory, a lock slot contiguous with the accessory opening dimensioned to receive a lock tab that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the cutting accessory, and a groove that intersects the lock slot and opens into the accessory opening;

    a power generating unit disposed within said housing for actuating the cutting accessory, said power generating unit including a coupling member for transferring power generated by said power generating unit to the cutting accessory;

    a lock ring fitted in the distal end of said housing so as to surround the accessory opening and the lock slot, the groove accommodating a section of said lock ring that is disposed in the lock slot, wherein the groove and the lock slot each have a depth, the depth of the groove being greater than the depth of the lock slot, said lock ring and said distal end of said housing collectively dimensioned so that when said lock ring is moved to the release state, said lock ring seats in a portion of the groove below the lock slot;

    a release button integral with said lock ring that is depressed to move said lock ring from the locked state to a release state in which said lock ring is clear of the lock slot;

    a biasing member disposed between an outer surface of the distal end of said housing and said lock ring or said release button so as to bias said lock ring so that the release button is urged away from said distal end of said housing to hold said lock ring in a locked state wherein a section of said lock ring is disposed in the lock slot; and

    a cover plate fitted over said lock ring and secured to said distal end of said housing to hold said lock ring thereto.
