Abstract

A technique for graphically processing perimeter information includes determining a polar representation of the perimeter of an object to define polar perimeter information, storing the polar perimeter information, retrieving the stored polar perimeter information using an overlay, and applying the retrieved polar perimeter information to provide a graphical effect within a scene (such as, but not limited to, a shadow effect).

Claims

1. A method, implemented by a computing device, for applying polar perimeter information to provide a graphical effect, the method comprising:

determining texture coordinates that define where to apply the polar perimeter information within a scene, the polar perimeter information describing a perimeter of an object;

placing an overlay on top of the scene at a determined location defined by the texture coordinates;

retrieving the polar perimeter information using the overlay;

providing the graphical effect based on the retrieved polar perimeter information; and

displaying via a display device, the scene with the graphical effect.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the determination of the texture coordinates comprises:

identifying transform information that represents an orientation of the object with respect to a light source vantage point; and

generating the texture coordinates on the basis of the transform information.

A method according to claim 1, wherein the overlay includes a polar angle indexing component, and wherein the retrieving comprises using the polar angle indexing component to retrieve stored polar perimeter radius values associated with respective polar angle values identified by the angle indexing component.

A method according to claim 3, wherein the overlay includes a radius determination component, and wherein the method further comprises using the radius determination component to determine polar radius values within the scene, the polar radius values defining respective distances between points in the scene and a reference center point.

5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the providing further comprises using the retrieved polar perimeter radius values and the determined polar radius values to apply a shadow to the scene, wherein the applied shadow is representative of a shadow cast by the object.

6. A method according to claim 1, wherein the providing comprises using the polar perimeter information to apply a shadow to the scene, wherein the applied shadow is representative of a shadow cast by the object.

7. A method according to claim 1, wherein the perimeter information is computed off-line prior to the rendering of the scene.

8. A method according to claim 1, wherein the providing of the graphical effect is implemented using a pixel shader.

9. One or more computer-readable media encoded with computer-executable instructions that, when executed, perform the method recited in claim 1.

10. One or more computer-readable media encoded with computer-executable instructions, comprising:

polar perimeter information describing a perimeter of an object;

location determination logic configured to determine texture coordinates that define where to apply the polar perimeter information within a scene; and

application logic configured to;

place an overlay on top of the scene at a location defined by the texture coordinates;

retrieve the polar perimeter information using the overlay; and

apply the polar perimeter information to provide a graphical effect within the scene.

11. The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 10, wherein the location determination logic is further configured to:

identify transform information that represents an orientation of the object with respect to a light source vantage point; and

generate the texture coordinates on the basis of the transform information.

The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 10, wherein the overlay includes a polar angle indexing component, and wherein the computer-executable instructions further comprise look-up logic configured to use the polar angle indexing component to retrieve stored polar perimeter radius values associated with respective polar angle values identified by the polar angle indexing component.

The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 12, wherein the overlay includes a radius determination component, and wherein the computer-executable instructions further comprise radial determination logic configured to use the radius determination component to determine polar radius values within the scene, the polar radius values defining respective distances between points in the scene and a reference center point.

The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 13, wherein the computer-executable instructions further comprise effect application logic configured to use the retrieved polar perimeter radius values and the determined polar radius values to apply a shadow to the scene, wherein the applied shadow is representative of a shadow cast by the object.

The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 10, wherein the computer-executable instructions further comprise effect generation logic configured to use the polar perimeter information to apply a shadow to the scene, wherein the applied shadow is representative of a shadow cast by the object.

16. The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 10, wherein the polar perimeter information is computed off-line prior to rendering the scene.

17. The one or more computer-readable media as recited in claim 10, wherein the computer-executable instructions further comprise a pixel shader configured to apply the polar perimeter information to provide the graphical effect within the scene.

18. An apparatus for applying polar perimeter information to provide a graphical effect, comprising:

means for determining texture coordinates that define where to apply the polar perimeter information within a scene, the polar perimeter information describing a perimeter of an object;

means for placing an overlay on top of the scene at a determined location defined by the texture coordinates;

means for retrieving the polar perimeter information using the overlay;

means for providing the graphical effect based on the retrieved polar perimeter information; and

means for providing the scene with the graphical effect to a display device whereby the scene with the graphical effect is displayed.

19. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for performing each of the means recited in claim 18.
