Abstract

Color measuring systems and methods such as for determining the color or other characteristics of teeth are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics are spaced apart from a central source fiber optic and receive light reflected from the surface of the object/tooth being measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object/tooth being measured. Under processor control, the color measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention. A method of producing dental prostheses based on measured data also is disclosed. Measured data also may be stored and/or organized as part of a patient data base.

Claims

1. A method of determining the optical characteristics of a dental object, comprising the steps of:

positioning a probe in proximity to the dental object;

taking a plurality of optical characteristics measurements of the dental object with a color measurement system, wherein light received by the probe from the dental object is coupled to the color measurement system, wherein the color measurement system includes at least a processor and a memory;

storing data resulting from the plurality of optical characteristics measurements in the memory;

analyzing the stored data resulting from the plurality of optical characteristics measurements with the processor, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was moved with respect to the dental object; and

based on the analysis of whether the probe was moved with respect to the dental object, selectively generating optical characteristics data representative of the optical characteristics of the dental object or rejecting the plurality of optical characteristics measurements.

2. method of claim 1, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was held perpendicular to the dental object.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was moved angularly or laterally with respect to the dental object.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises the step of taking a measurement of a calibration standard.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the color measurement system measures light returned from the dental object in a plurality of spectral bands.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the color measurement system operates with audio feedback, wherein the audio feedback guides a user'"'"'s operation of the color measurement system.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein the optical characteristics data are generated a plurality of times for a plurality of dental objects to generate a plurality of optical characteristics database records.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the database records are associated with particular patients.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the database records store pictures of the dental objects.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the pictures of the dental objects comprise images of the dental objects captured with a camera.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are generated a plurality of times for the dental object, wherein a database stores a historical record of the optical characteristics of the dental object.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein a second dental object is produced based on the optical characteristics data.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined prior to installation of the second dental object in a patient'"'"'s mouth.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with the color measurement system or a second color measurement system.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined at a location where the second dental object is produced.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with a second color measurement system.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined at a location where the second dental object is to be installed in the patient'"'"'s mouth.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with the color measurement system.

19. The method of claim 12, wherein the second dental object comprises a denture, a dental prosthesis, a filling, a tooth-colored filling, or a composite filling.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein the second dental object is produced based on a porcelain recipe determined in accordance with the optical characteristics data.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are electronically transmitted to a remote location, wherein a second object is produced at the remote location based on the transmitted optical characteristics data.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the electronic transmission comprises a modem transmission.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the electronic transmission includes a transmission of a picture of the dental object.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the picture of the dental object comprises an image of the dental object captured with a camera.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein the database includes date and time information associated with the optical characteristics data.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein optical characteristics data indicative of the optical characteristics are generated a plurality of times, including at least once for a plurality of regions of the dental object.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the database stores sectoring information with the optical characteristics data.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the database stores information corresponding to a pictorial representation of the dental object that includes sector grid lines.

29. The method of claim 1, wherein a material mixing unit receives the optical characteristics data, wherein the material mixing unit prepares constituent materials for a second dental object based on the optical characteristics data.

30. The method of claim 1, wherein a camera captures an image of the dental object, wherein the camera comprises an intraoral camera.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein a camera captures an image of the dental object, wherein the camera comprises a video camera.

32. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of a closest match or matches to one or a plurality of sets of stored shade guide values.

33. The method of claim 1, wherein the memory stores data corresponding to a plurality of shade guide systems, each of the plurality of shade guide systems having a plurality of shade guide values, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of a closest match or matches to one or more of the shade guide values in the plurality of shade guide systems.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of the closest match to one of the shade guide values in the plurality of shade guide systems.

35. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials for preparing a second dental object.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials and instruction information for preparing a second dental object.

37. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of one or more sets of color tri-stimulus values.

38. The method of claim 1, wherein an image of the dental object is displayed, wherein data indicative of the color or a shade of the dental object in one or more particular regions of the plurality of regions are displayed in an overlaid manner over the one or more particular regions.

39. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

removably securing a contamination-prevention implement to the probe, wherein light is provided to the dental object through the implement, wherein light received from the dental object is coupled to the color measurement system through a hole in the implement, wherein the implement is adapted to prevent the probe from contacting the dental object; and

taking at least one optical characteristic measurement of a calibration standard with the implement removably secured to the probe, wherein the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the calibration standard serves to calibrate out possible distortion introduced by the implement.

40. A method of determining the optical characteristics of a dental object, comprising the steps of:

positioning a probe in proximity to the dental object;

taking a plurality of optical characteristics measurements of the dental object with a color measurement system, wherein light received by the probe from the dental object is coupled to the color measurement system, wherein the color measurement system includes at least a processor and a memory;

storing data resulting from the plurality of optical characteristics measurements in the memory;

defining an acceptance range for data resulting from the optical characteristics measurements;

analyzing the stored data resulting from the plurality of optical characteristics measurements with the processor, wherein the processor analyzes whether the data resulting from the optical characteristics measurements are within the acceptance range; and

based on the analysis of whether the data resulting from the optical characteristics measurements are within the acceptance range, selectively generating optical characteristics data representative of the optical characteristics of the dental object or rejecting the plurality of optical characteristics measurements.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was held perpendicular to the dental object.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was moved angularly or laterally with respect to the dental object.

43. The method of claim 40, wherein the method further comprises the step of taking a measurement of a calibration standard.

44. The method of claim 40, wherein the color measurement system measures light returned from the dental object in a plurality of spectral bands.

45. The method of claim 40, wherein the color measurement system operates with audio feedback, wherein the audio feedback guides a user'"'"'s operation of the color measurement system.

46. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein the optical characteristics data are generated a plurality of times for a plurality of dental objects to generate a plurality of optical characteristics database records.

47. The method of claim 46, wherein the database records are associated with particular patients.

48. The method of claim 46, wherein the database records store pictures of the dental objects.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the pictures of the dental objects comprise images of the dental objects captured with a camera.

50. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are generated a plurality of times for the dental object, wherein a database stores a historical record of the optical characteristics of the dental object.

51. The method of claim 40, wherein a second dental object is produced based on the optical characteristics data.

52. The method of claim 51, wherein optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined prior to installation of the second dental object in a patient'"'"'s mouth.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with the color measurement system or a second color measurement system.

54. The method of claim 52, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined at a location where the second dental object is produced.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with a second color measurement system.

56. The method of claim 52, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined at a location where the second dental object is to be installed in the patient'"'"'s mouth.

57. The method of claim 56, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with the color measurement system.

58. The method of claim 51, wherein the second dental object comprises a denture, a dental prosthesis, a filling, a tooth-colored filling or a composite filling.

59. The method of claim 51, wherein the second dental object is produced based on a porcelain recipe determined in accordance with the optical characteristics data.

60. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are electronically transmitted to a remote location, wherein a second object is produced at the remote location based on the transmitted optical characteristics data.

61. The method of claim 60, wherein the electronic transmission comprises a modem transmission.

62. The method of claim 60, wherein the electronic transmission includes a transmission of a picture of the dental object.

63. The method of claim 62, wherein the picture of the dental object comprises an image of the dental object captured with a camera.

64. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein the database includes date and time information associated with the optical characteristics data.

65. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein optical characteristics data indicative of the optical characteristics are generated a plurality of times, including at least once for a plurality of regions of the dental object.

66. The method of claim 65, wherein the database stores sectoring information with the optical characteristics data.

67. The method of claim 66, wherein the database stores information corresponding to a pictorial representation of the dental object that includes sector grid lines.

68. The method of claim 40, wherein a material mixing unit receives the optical characteristics data, wherein the material mixing unit prepares constituent materials for a second dental object based on the optical characteristics data.

69. The method of claim 40, wherein a camera captures an image of the dental object, wherein the camera comprises an intraoral camera.

70. The method of claim 40, wherein a camera captures an image of the dental object, wherein the camera comprises a video camera.

71. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of a closest match or matches to one or a plurality of sets of stored shade guide values.

72. The method of claim 40, wherein the memory stores data corresponding to a plurality of shade guide systems, each of the plurality of shade guide systems having a plurality of shade guide values, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of a closest match or matches to one or more of the shade guide values in the plurality of shade guide systems.

73. The method of claim 72, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of the closest match to one of the shade guide values in the plurality of shade guide systems.

74. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials for preparing a second dental object.

75. The method of claim 74, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials and instruction information for preparing a second dental object.

76. The method of claim 40, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of one or more sets of color tri-stimulus values.

77. The method of claim 40, wherein an image of the dental object is displayed, wherein data indicative of the color or a shade of the dental object in one or more particular regions of the plurality of regions are displayed in an overlaid manner over the one or more particular regions.

78. The method of claim 40, further comprising the steps of:

removably securing a contamination-prevention implement to the probe, wherein light is provided to the dental object through the implement, wherein light received from the dental object is coupled to the color measurement system through a hole in the implement, wherein the implement is adapted to prevent the probe from contacting the dental object; and

taking at least one optical characteristic measurement of a calibration standard with the implement removably secured to the probe, wherein the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the calibration standard serves to calibrate out possible distortion introduced by the implement.

79. A method of determining the optical characteristics of a dental object with a probe, a color measurement system, and a removably securable contamination-prevention implement adapted for the probe, wherein the color measurement system includes at least a processor and a memory, the method comprising the steps of:

removably securing the contamination-prevention implement to the probe, wherein light is provided to the dental object through the implement, wherein light received from the dental object is coupled to the color measurement system through a hole in the implement, wherein the implement is adapted to prevent the probe from contacting the dental object;

taking at least one optical characteristic measurement of a calibration standard with the implement removably secured to the probe, wherein the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the calibration standard serves to calibrate out possible distortion introduced by the implement;

positioning the probe in proximity to the dental object, wherein the implement remains removably secured to the probe;

taking a plurality of optical characteristics measurements of the dental object with the color measurement system;

storing data resulting from the plurality of optical characteristics measurements in the memory;

defining an acceptance range for data resulting from the optical characteristics measurements;

analyzing the stored data resulting from the plurality of optical characteristics measurements with the processor, wherein the processor analyzes whether the data resulting from the optical characteristics measurements are within the acceptance range; and

based on the analysis of whether the data resulting from the optical characteristics measurements are within the acceptance range, and based on the at least one optical characteristic measurement of a calibration standard, selectively generating optical characteristics data representative of the optical characteristics of the dental object or rejecting the plurality of optical characteristics measurements.

80. The method of claim 79, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was held perpendicular to the dental object.

81. The method of claim 79, wherein the processor analyzes whether the probe was moved angularly or laterally with respect to the dental object.

82. The method of claim 79, wherein the method further comprises the step of taking a measurement of a calibration standard.

83. The method of claim 79, wherein the color measurement system measures light returned from the dental object in a plurality of spectral bands.

84. The method of claim 79, wherein the color measurement system operates with audio feedback, wherein the audio feedback guides a user'"'"'s operation of the color measurement system.

85. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein the optical characteristics data are generated a plurality of times for a plurality of dental objects to generate a plurality of optical characteristics database records.

86. The method of claim 85, wherein the database records are associated with particular patients.

87. The method of claim 85, wherein the database records store pictures of the dental objects.

88. The method of claim 87, wherein the pictures of the dental objects comprise images of the dental objects captured with a camera.

89. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are generated a plurality of times for the dental object, wherein a database stores a historical record of the optical characteristics of the dental object.

90. The method of claim 79, wherein a second dental object is produced based on the optical characteristics data.

91. The method of claim 90, wherein optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined prior to installation of the second dental object in a patient'"'"'s mouth.

92. The method of claim 91, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with the color measurement system or a second color measurement system.

93. The method of claim 91, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined at a location where the second dental object is produced.

94. The method of claim 93, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with a second color measurement system.

95. The method of claim 91, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined at a location where the second dental object is to be installed in the patient'"'"'s mouth.

96. The method of claim 95, wherein the optical characteristics of the second dental object are determined with the color measurement system.

97. The method of claim 90, wherein the second dental object comprises a denture, a dental prosthesis, a filling, a tooth-colored filling or a composite filling.

98. The method of claim 90, wherein the second dental object is produced based on a porcelain recipe determined in accordance with the optical characteristics data.

99. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are electronically transmitted to a remote location, wherein a second object is produced at the remote location based on the transmitted optical characteristics data.

100. The method of claim 99, wherein the electronic transmission comprises a modem transmission.

101. The method of claim 99, wherein the electronic transmission includes a transmission of a picture of the dental object.

102. The method of claim 101, wherein the picture of the dental object comprises an image of the dental object captured with a camera.

103. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein the database includes date and time information associated with the optical characteristics data.

104. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are stored in a database, wherein optical characteristics data indicative of the optical characteristics are generated a plurality of times, including at least once for a plurality of regions of the dental object.

105. The method of claim 104, wherein the database stores sectoring information with the optical characteristics data.

106. The method of claim 105, wherein the database stores information corresponding to a pictorial representation of the dental object that includes sector grid lines.

107. The method of claim 79, wherein a material mixing unit receives the optical characteristics data, wherein the material mixing unit prepares constituent materials for a second dental object based on the optical characteristics data.

108. The method of claim 79, wherein a camera captures an image of the dental object, wherein the camera comprises an intraoral camera.

109. The method of claim 79, wherein a camera captures an image of the dental object, wherein the camera comprises a video camera.

110. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of a closest match or matches to one or a plurality of sets of stored shade guide values.

111. The method of claim 79, wherein the memory stores data corresponding to a plurality of shade guide systems, each of the plurality of shade guide systems having a plurality of shade guide values, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of a closest match or matches to one or more of the shade guide values in the plurality of shade guide systems.

112. The method of claim 111, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of the closest match to one of the shade guide values in the plurality of shade guide systems.

113. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials for preparing a second dental object.

114. The method of claim 113, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials and instruction information for preparing a second dental object.

115. The method of claim 79, wherein the optical characteristics data are output in the form of one or more sets of color tri-stimulus values.

116. The method of claim 79, wherein an image of the dental object is displayed, wherein data indicative of the color or a shade of the dental object in one or more particular regions of the plurality of regions are displayed in an overlaid manner over the one or more particular regions.

117. A method of determining a shade of a dental object with an instrument including a color measurement system and a removably securable disposable implement adapted for the instrument, the method comprising the steps of:

removably securing the disposable implement to the instrument, wherein light is provided to the dental object through the disposable implement, wherein light received from the dental object is coupled to the color measurement system through a hole in the disposable implement, wherein the disposable implement is adapted to prevent the instrument from contacting the dental object;

taking at least one optical characteristic measurement of a calibration standard with the color measurement system, wherein the disposable implement is removably secured to the instrument during the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the calibration standard;

storing data from the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the calibration standard;

positioning the probe in proximity to the dental object, wherein the disposable implement remains removably secured to the probe;

taking at least one optical characteristic measurement of the dental object with the color measurement system;

storing data resulting from the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the dental object;

processing the data resulting from the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the dental object based on the data resulting from the at least one optical characteristic measurement of the calibration standard;

accessing stored data characteristic of a plurality of shades of at least one shade guide system and determining at least one closest matching shade of the plurality of shades of the at least one shade guide system; and

displaying a representation of the at least one closest matching shade.

118. The method of claim 117, wherein the instrument operates with audio feedback, wherein the audio feedback guides a user'"'"'s operation of the instrument.

119. The method of claim 117, wherein data characteristic of a plurality of shades of a plurality of shade guide systems are stored in the instrument, wherein a single closest matching shade of the plurality of shade guide systems is displayed.

120. The method of claim 117, wherein the optical characteristics data are used to electronically output a proposed recipe of materials for preparing a second dental object.

121. The method of claim 117, wherein optical characteristics data of the dental object are output in the form of one or more sets of color tri-stimulus values.

122. The method of claim 117, wherein the instrument provides light to the dental object in a plurality of wavelengths or spectral bands, wherein the step of taking at least one optical characteristic measurement of the dental object comprises the steps of:

receiving light returned from the dental object with a sensor, wherein the sensor generates one or more output signals having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by the sensor;

generating a first signal having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by the sensor of a first wavelength or spectral band;

generating a second signal having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by the sensor of a second wavelength or spectral band;

generating a third signal having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by the sensor of a third wavelength or spectral band;

wherein a color characteristic of the light returned from the dental object is determined based on at least the first, second and third signals.
