Abstract

A parallel router comprising: 1) a plurality of routing nodes, each of the plurality of routing nodes capable of receiving message packets from and transmitting message packets to external devices, wherein each of the routing nodes maintains a routing table suitable for routing message packets from transmitting ones of the plurality of routing nodes to receiving ones of the plurality of routing nodes; and 2) a switch fabric capable of transmitting the messages packets between the transmitting nodes and the receiving nodes, wherein a designated one of the plurality of routing nodes is operable to receive from non-designated ones of the plurality of routing nodes link state advertisement (LSA) message packets containing link state information, wherein the designated routing node aggregates the LSA message packets to thereby form a link-state database.

Claims

1. A parallel router comprising:

a plurality of routing nodes, each of said plurality of routing nodes capable of receiving message packets from and transmitting message packets to external devices, wherein said each of said plurality of routing nodes maintains a routing table suitable for routing message packets from transmitting ones of said plurality of routing nodes to receiving ones of said plurality of routing nodes; and

a switch fabric capable of transmitting said message packets between said transmitting nodes and said receiving nodes,

wherein a designated one of said plurality of routing nodes is operable to receive from non-designated ones of said plurality of routing nodes link state advertisement (LSA) message packets containing link state information, wherein said designated routing node aggregates said LSA message packets to thereby form a link state database and transmits said aggregated LSA message packets to at least one of said non-designated routing nodes.

2. The parallel router as set forth in claim 1 wherein said designated routing node transmits said aggregated LSA message packets periodically.

3. The parallel router as set forth in claim 2 wherein said at least one non-desginated routing node uses said aggregated LSA message packets to update said routing table associated with said at least one non-designated routing node.

4. The parallel router as set forth in claim 1 wherein said designated routing node broadcasts said aggregated LSA message packets to each of said non-designated routing nodes.

5. The parallel router as set forth in claim 4 wherein said designated routing node broadcasts said aggregated LSA message packets periodically.

6. The parallel router as set forth in claim 5 wherein each of said non-designated routing nodes uses said aggregated LSA message packets to update said routing table associated with said each non-designated routing node.

7. The parallel router as set forth in claim 6 wherein said switch fabric comprises a plurality of switch processors capable of routing message packets between said routing nodes.

8. The parallel muter as set forth in claim 7 wherein said each routing node comprises an input-output processor (IOP) capable of transmitting said message packets to and receiving said message packets from said plurality of routing nodes via said switching switch fabric.

9. The parallel router as set forth in claim 1 wherein said switch fabric comprises a plurality of switch processors capable of routing message packets between said routing nodes.

10. The parallel router as set forth in claim 9 wherein said each routing node comprises an input-output processor (IOP) capable of transmitting said message packets to and receiving said message packets from said plurality of routing nodes via said switch fabric.

11. A telecommunication network comprising a plurality of parallel routers capable of routing message packets between telecommunication devices coupled to said telecommunication network, each of said parallel routers comprising:

a plurality of routing nodes, each of said plurality of routing nodes capable of receiving message packets from and transmitting message packets to external devices, wherein said each of said plurality of routing nodes maintains a routing table suitable for routing message packets from transmitting ones of said plurality of routing nodes to receiving ones of said plurality of routing nodes; and

a switch fabric capable of transmitting said message packets between said transmitting nodes and said receiving nodes,

wherein a designated one of said plurality of routing nodes is operable to receive from non-designated ones of said plurality of routing nodes link state advertisement (LSA) message packets containing link state information, wherein said designated routing node aggregates said LSA message packets to thereby form a link state database and transmits said aggregated LSA message packets to at least one of said non-designated routing nodes.

12. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 11 wherein said designated routing node transmits said aggregated LSA message packets periodically.

13. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 12 wherein said at least one non-designated routing node uses said aggregated LSA message packets to update said routing table associated with said at least one non-designated routing node.

14. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 11 wherein said designated routing node broadcasts said aggregated LSA message packets to each of said non-designated routing nodes.

15. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 14 wherein said designated routing node broadcasts said aggregated LSA message packets periodically.

16. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 15 wherein each of said non-designated routing nodes uses said aggregated LSA message packets to update said routing table associated with said each non-designated routing node.

17. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 16 wherein said switch fabric comprises a plurality of switch processors capable of routing message packets between said routing nodes.

18. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 17 wherein said each routing node comprises an input-output processor (IOP) capable of transmitting said message packets to and receiving said message packets from said plurality of routing nodes via said switching fabric.

19. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 11 wherein said switch fabric comprises a plurality of switch processors capable of routing message packets between said routing nodes.

20. The telecommunication network as set forth in claim 19 wherein said each routing node comprises an input-output processor (IOP) capable of transmitting said message packets to and receiving said message packets from said plurality of routing nodes via said switching fabric.
