Rear projection imaging system with image warping distortion correction system and associated method
First Claim
1. A method for reducing distortion in a projected image of the known image pattern in a projection imaging system, said method comprisingdisplaying a reference image pattern on a viewing screen in a rear projection imaging system by transmitting input video signals corresponding to the reference image pattern to a microdisplay, operating said microdisplay to create a visual image of the reference image pattern and projecting said visual image of the reference image pattern from the microdisplay and through projection optics disposed between the microdisplay and the viewing screen to create a projected image of the reference image pattern visible to a viewer;
- capturing a location and a shape of the projected image of the reference image pattern on said viewing screen with a camera;
determining said location and said shape of the projected image of the reference image pattern on said rear projection imaging system with a microprocessor operably connected to the camera;
comparing said projected image of the reference image pattern to the reference image pattern to calculate distortion effects; and
generating a warping map based on the comparison of the reference image pattern and the captured projected image of the reference image pattern.

Abstract
A rear projection imaging system with an image warping distortion correction system using a camera and processing unit to generate a warping map that corrects for image distortion. The warping map is generated in an iterative process by displaying a known pattern on a viewing screen and, through the use of a camera, having a microprocessor determine the location and shape of the pattern on the screen. The microprocessor then compares the displayed image to the original reference image, calculates the distortion effects present in the projection optics, and generates a warping map.

1. A method for reducing distortion in a projected image of the known image pattern in a projection imaging system, said method comprising
displaying a reference image pattern on a viewing screen in a rear projection imaging system by transmitting input video signals corresponding to the reference image pattern to a microdisplay, operating said microdisplay to create a visual image of the reference image pattern and projecting said visual image of the reference image pattern from the microdisplay and through projection optics disposed between the microdisplay and the viewing screen to create a projected image of the reference image pattern visible to a viewer; -
capturing a location and a shape of the projected image of the reference image pattern on said viewing screen with a camera; determining said location and said shape of the projected image of the reference image pattern on said rear projection imaging system with a microprocessor operably connected to the camera; comparing said projected image of the reference image pattern to the reference image pattern to calculate distortion effects; and generating a warping map based on the comparison of the reference image pattern and the captured projected image of the reference image pattern. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4)

5. A projection imaging system comprising:
-
a microdisplay imaging system comprising a microdisplay, projection optics and a viewing screen; a control system operable to convert an input video signal to image generation commands and transmit image generation commands to a microdisplay, said control system operable to generate image generation commands corresponding to a reference image pattern; a microdisplay operable to accept the image generation commands from the control system and output a visual image to projection optics, including a visual image of the reference image pattern; projection optics operable to transmit the visual image, including the visual image of the reference image pattern, from the microdisplay to an image plane to create a projected image; a camera positioned to capture an image of the projected reference image pattern and transmit data corresponding to the projected image pattern to the control system; wherein said control system is further operable to compare the reference image pattern with the data corresponding to the projected image pattern to the control system, and generate a warping map based on that comparison, and thereafter pre-warp image generation commands so that the projected image is corrected for distortions in the system. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8, 9)
