Abstract

The disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for a compact birefringent interference imaging spectrometer. More specifically, the disclosure relates to a portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample. The portable system may include a first photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons to thereby produce photons scattered by the sample; an optical lens for collecting the scattered photons; a filter for receiving the collected scattered photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample; and a rejection filter for blocking the photons from said first photon emission source from entering said first photon detector. The disclosure additionally relates to methods of using such portable systems.

Claims

1. A portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

an optical lens for collecting a plurality of photons scattered by the sample upon illumination;

a rejection filter for blocking the first plurality of photons from entering a first filter, the first filter receiving the collected scattered photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; and

a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrum is a spatially accurate wavelength-resolved image.

The system of claim 1 wherein said first photon detector is selected from the group consisting of charge-coupled device, complementary metal oxide semiconductor, charge injection device, intensified charge injection device, electron multiplying charge-coupled device, silicon photo diode, silicon avalanche diode, and other focal plane array devices.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrum is obtained over a predetermined period of time and said sample is stationary during said predetermined period of time.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein said scattered photons include photons emitted by said sample.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein said scattered photons include photons reflected by said sample.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrum is a Raman spectrum.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is a hand-held system.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein ones of said filtered photons each have a wavelength within a predetermined wavelength band.

10. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

said optical lens for collecting a plurality of photons emitted by said sample upon illumination;

a polarization beam splitter for separating the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization from the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization;

a second filter; and

a second photon detector, wherein;

said first filter receives the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization and provides therefrom first filtered photons,

said first photon detector receives the first filtered photons and obtains therefrom a first spectrum of the sample,

said second filter receives the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization and provides therefrom second filtered photons, and

said second photon detector receives the second filtered photons and obtains therefrom a second spectrum of the sample.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein said first spectrum is a Raman spectrum.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein said second spectrum is a fluorescence spectrum.

13. The system of claim 10 wherein said second spectrum is a near infrared spectrum.

14. The system of claim 10 wherein said emitted photons are fluorescent photons.

15. The system of claim 10 wherein a wavelength of said emitted photons is in the near infrared wavelength range.

16. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is a liquid crystal tunable filter.

17. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is a nematic liquid crystal tunable filter.

18. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is a smectic liquid crystal tunable filter.

19. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is pixelized.

20. The system of claim 19 further comprising a black matrix mask to prevent light leakage at an interpixel region.

21. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is columnized.

22. The system of claim 21 further comprising a black matrix mask to prevent light leakage at an intercolumn region.

23. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter comprises:

a first filter stage comprising a first retarder element and a first liquid crystal cell; and

a second filter stage,

wherein either the first element or the first cell do not have a uniform thickness.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein said second stage comprises a second retarder element having a first uniform thickness and a second liquid crystal cell having a second uniform thickness.

25. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second stages define a hybrid filter.

26. The system of claim 24 wherein the first uniform thickness and the second uniform thickness are substantially the same.

27. The system of claim 24 wherein the first element does not have a uniform thickness.

28. The system of claim 23 wherein the first element is wedge-shaped.

29. The system of claim 23 wherein the first element has a stepped-wedge shape.

30. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second stages comprise a birefringence interference filter.

31. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second stages comprise an Evans split element filter.

32. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second stages comprise a Sole filter.

33. The system of claim 23 wherein the first and second stages comprise a Lyot filter.

34. The system of claim 33 including an Evans split element filter.

35. The system of claim 23 wherein said first element is comprised of quartz.

36. The system of claim 23 wherein said first element is comprised of lithium niobate.

37. The system of claim 23 wherein said first filter is a tunable filter.

38. The system of claim 23 wherein said first filter includes a polarizer.

39. The system of claim 23 wherein said first filter is pixelized.

40. The system of claim 23 wherein said first filter is columnized.

41. The system of claim 10 wherein said first optical filter comprises:

a pixelized liquid crystal stage;

a voltage source operably connected to the liquid crystal pixels; and

means for controlling the amount of voltage applied by said voltage source to ones of said pixels;

wherein the liquid crystal is substantially uniformly thick in the direction of photon travel therethrough.

42. The system of claim 10 wherein said first optical filter comprises:

a columnized liquid crystal stage;

a voltage source operably connected to the liquid crystal columns; and

means for controlling the amount of voltage applied by said voltage source to ones of said columns;

wherein the liquid crystal is substantially uniformly thick in the direction of photon travel therethrough.

43. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is a Fabry-Perot filter.

44. The system of claim 10 wherein said first filter is configured to operate with a handheld device.

45. The system of claim 10 further comprising a line scan Raman imaging system for receiving the collected scattered photons and providing a Raman image therefrom.

46. The system of claim 45 wherein the line scan Raman imaging system is configured to operate with a handheld device.

47. The system of claim 45 wherein the line scan Raman imaging system uses deep-X-ray lithography spectrometer.

49. The method of claim 10 wherein the first spectrum and the second spectrum are obtained substantially simultaneously.

50. The method of claim 49 further comprising the step of obtaining a fluorescence image and a Raman image substantially simultaneously.

51. The method of claim 49 further comprising the step of obtaining a near infrared image and a Raman image substantially simultaneously.

48. A method for obtaining a spectrum of a sample using a hand-held device, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a sample;

collecting photons scattered by the sample;

blocking the first plurality of photons from entering a first filter;

receiving the collected scattered photons with the first filter and providing therefrom filtered photons; and

receiving the filtered photons with a first photon detector and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample.

52. A portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

an optical lens for collecting a first plurality of photons reflected by the sample;

a rejection filter for blocking the first plurality of photons from entering a first filter;

said first filter for receiving the collected reflected photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; and

a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample.

53. The system of claim 52 further comprising:

a polarization beam splitter for separating the reflected photons from photons emitted from the sample, the reflected and the emitted photons having a first and a second polarization respectively;

a second filter; and

a second photon detector.

54. The system of claim 53 wherein:

said optical lens collects the reflected photons and the emitted photons,

said first filter receives the reflected and the emitted photons each having a first polarization and provides therefrom first filtered photons,

said first photon detector receives the first filtered photons and obtains therefrom a first spectrum of the sample,

said second filter receives the reflected and the emitted photons each having a second polarization and provides therefrom second filtered photons, and

said second photon detector receives the second filtered photons and obtains therefrom a second spectrum of the sample.

55. The system of claim 53 wherein said first spectrum is a Raman spectrum.

56. The system of claim 54 wherein said second spectrum is a fluorescence spectrum.

57. The system of claim 54 wherein said second spectrum is a near infrared spectrum.

58. The system of claim 53 wherein said emitted photons are fluorescent photons.

59. The system of claim 53 wherein a wavelength of said emitted photons is in the near infrared wavelength range.

60. A method for obtaining plural spectra of a sample using a hand-held device, comprising the steps of:

providing a sample;

collecting a first plurality of scattered photons and a second plurality of emitted photons from the sample;

separating the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization from the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization using the polarization beam splitter;

forming a first spectrum of the sample from the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization; and

forming a second spectrum of the sample from the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization.

61. The method of claim 60, further comprising receiving the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization and providing therefrom first filtered photons, the first filtered photons defining the first spectrum of the sample.

62. The method of claim 60, further comprising receiving the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization and providing therefrom second filtered photons, the second filtered photons defining the second spectrum of the sample.
