Exercise resistance method using an adjustable weight dumbbell
DCFirst Claim
1. A method of exercise involving an adjustable weight dumbbell, comprising the steps of:
- providing a base member including a handle, a first weight engaging member secured to a first end of the handle, and a second weight engaging member secured to an opposite, second end of the handle, with each said weight engaging member having a side that faces away from the handle and that defines a respective, downwardly opening, T-shaped slot;
providing a first weight plate having a side that defines a T-shaped rail sized and configured to move into the slot in the first weight engaging member;
providing a second weight plate having a side that defines a T-shaped rail sized and configured to move into the slot in the second weight engaging member;
arranging the base member relative to each said weight plate in such a manner that each said rail moves into a respective said slot;
moving a first weight selector to a position that prevents the rail on the first weight plate from moving out of the slot in the first weight engaging member;
moving a second weight selector to a position that prevents the rail on the second weight plate from moving out of the slot in the second weight engaging member; and
lifting the base member together with each said weight plate secured thereto.

Abstract
On some embodiments, a vertical stack of weights is disposed beneath a base member, and at least one selector rod is rotatably mounted on the base member and selectively rotated into engagement with a desired number of the vertically stacked weights. On other embodiments, a horizontal stack of weights is disposed on opposite sides of a base member, and at least one selector rod is movably mounted on the base member and selectively moved into engagement with the desired number of horizontally stacked weights. On still other embodiments, these two types of arrangements are implemented in combination. Various methods may be performed using various combinations of these arrangements to provide adjustable resistance to exercise. In one such method, a base member is lifted by grasping a handle that extends longitudinally between first and second weight engaging ends of the base member. The base member is positioned between first and second weight plates in such a manner that rails on the weight plates slide into slots defined in respective weight engaging ends to prevent the weight plates from moving longitudinally relative to the base member. First and second weight selectors are moved to positions that prevent the rails on the weight plates from sliding out of the slots defined in the respective weight engaging ends, and then the base member is lifted with each weight plate secured thereto.

-
providing a base member including a handle that defines a longitudinal axis, a first weight engaging member secured to a first end of the handle, and a second weight engaging member secured to an opposite, second end of the handle; providing a first weight plate having a rail that is configured to slide into a downwardly opening slot in the first weight engaging member; providing a second weight plate having a rail that is configured to slide into a downwardly opening slot in the second weight engaging member; moving the base member downward into engagement with the rail on each said weight plate to limit axial movement of each said weight plate relative to the handle; moving a first weight selector to a position that prevents the first weight plate from moving vertically relative to the base members moving a second weight selector to a position that prevents the second weight plate from moving vertically relative to the member; and lifting the base member together with each said weight plate secured thereto. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6)
