1. A method of exercise involving an adjustable weight dumbbell, comprising the steps of:

  • providing a base member including a handle, a first weight engaging member secured to a first end of the handle, and a second weight engaging member secured to an opposite, second end of the handle, with each said weight engaging member having a side that faces away from the handle and that defines a respective, downwardly opening, T-shaped slot;

    providing a first weight plate having a side that defines a T-shaped rail sized and configured to move into the slot in the first weight engaging member;

    providing a second weight plate having a side that defines a T-shaped rail sized and configured to move into the slot in the second weight engaging member;

    arranging the base member relative to each said weight plate in such a manner that each said rail moves into a respective said slot;

    moving a first weight selector to a position that prevents the rail on the first weight plate from moving out of the slot in the first weight engaging member;

    moving a second weight selector to a position that prevents the rail on the second weight plate from moving out of the slot in the second weight engaging member; and

    lifting the base member together with each said weight plate secured thereto.
