1. A stent having a substantially tubular body defining a longitudinal axis comprising:
- first and second adjacent annular segments, each annular segment defining a substantially sinusoidal shape having a plurality of peaks and valleys, the peaks of the first annular segment extending toward the second annular segment and being aligned longitudinally with the valleys of the second annular segment, the valleys of the second annular segment extending toward the first annular segment;
a plurality of bridge elements having a U-shaped portion between first and second connector arms, the first connector arm of one bridge element being connected between a first peak and a first valley of the first annular segment and the second connector arm being connected between a first peak and a first valley of the second annular segment, wherein the first connector arm and the second connector arm of each bridge element joins the annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape, the first peak of the first annular segment being aligned longitudinally with the first valley of the second annular segment and the first valley of the first annular segment being aligned longitudinally with the first peak of the second annular segment,wherein the stent does not comprise any annular segment between the first and second adjacent annular segments,wherein the first and second connector arms have substantially similar shapes, andwherein the first connector arm includes a first portion and the second connector arm includes a second portion, the first and second portions being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the stent.

This invention is a stent having a substantially tubular body defining a longitudinal axis comprising first and second adjacent annular segments, each segment defining a substantially sinusoidal shape having a plurality of peaks and valleys, the peaks of the first segment extending toward the second segment and being aligned longitudinally with the valleys of the second segment. The stent has a plurality of bridge elements having a U-shaped portion between first and second connector arms, the first connector arm of one bridge element being connected between a first peak and a first valley of the first segment and the second connector arm being connected between a first peak and a first valley of the second segment.

5. A method of preventing restenosis in a vessel comprising:

providing a stent having a substantially tubular body defining a longitudinal axis, the stent comprising first and second adjacent annular segments, each segment defining a substantially sinusoidal shape having a plurality of peaks and valleys, the peaks of the first annular segment extending toward the second annular segment and being aligned longitudinally with the valleys of the second annular segment, the valleys of the second annular segment extending toward the first annular segment such tat a first peak of the first annular segment is longitudinally aligned with a first valley of the second annular segment and a first valley of the first annular segment is aligned longitudinally with a second peak of the second annular segment, a plurality of bridge elements having a U-shaped portion between first and second connector arms, the first connector arm of one bridge element being connected between the first peak and the first valley of the first annular segment and the second connector arm being connected between the first peak and the first valley of the second annular segment, wherein the first connector arm and the second connector arm of each bridge element joins the annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape, wherein the stent does not comprise any annular segment between the first and second adjacent annular segments, wherein the first and second connector arms have substantially similar shapes, and wherein the first connector arm includes a first portion and the second connector arm includes a second portion, the first and second portions being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the stent; advancing the tubular body in the contracted condition through the lumen of the vessel to an area of stenosis; and deploying the tubular body within the lumen of the vessel by expanding the tubular body from the contracted to the expanded condition.

6. A method of making a stent comprising:

providing a tubular blank defining a longitudinal axis; and
forming the blank into first and second adjacent annular segments connected by a plurality of bridge elements, each annular segment defining a substantially sinusoidal shape having a plurality of peaks and valleys, the peaks of the first annular segment extending toward the second annular segment and being aligned longitudinally with the valleys of the second annular segment, the valleys of the second annular segment extending toward the first annular segment such that a first peak of the first annular segment is longitudinally aligned with a first valley of the second annular segment and a first valley of the first annular segment is aligned longitudinally with a second peak of the second annular segment, the plurality of bridge elements having a U-shaped portion between first and second connector arms, the first connector arm of one bridge element being connected between the first peak and the first valley of the first annular segment and the second connector arm being connected between the first peak and the first valley of the second annular segment, wherein the first connector arm and the second connector arm of each bridge element joins the annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape, wherein the stent does not comprise any annular segment between the first and second adjacent annular segments, wherein the first and second connector arms have substantially similar shapes, andwherein the first connector arm includes a first portion and the second connector arm includes a second portion, the first and second portions being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the stent.

7. A stent having a tubular body defining a longitudinal axis comprising:

first and second adjacent annular segments, each annular segment defining a sinusoidal shape having a plurality of peaks and valleys, the peaks of the first annular segment extending toward the second annular segment and being aligned longitudinally with the valleys of the second annular segment, the valleys of the second annular segment extending toward the first annular segment; and
a plurality of bridge elements connected between the first and second annular segments, each bridge element having a U-shaped portion between first and second connector arms, the first connector arm of a first bridge element being connected between a first peak and a first adjacent valley of the first annular segment and the second connector arm of the first bridge element being connected between a first peak and a first adjacent valley of the second annular segment in a manner such that the U-shaped portion extends in the direction of the first peak of the first annular segment and the first valley of the second annular segment, wherein a first connector arm of each bridge element is connected to the first annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape of the first segment and a second connector arm of each bridge element is connected to the second annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape of the second segment which is longitudinally aligned with the zero point at which the first connector arm is connected, the first peak of the first annular segment being aligned longitudinally with the first valley of the second annular segment and the first valley of the first annular segment being aligned longitudinally with the first peak of the second annular segment,wherein the stent does not comprise any annular segment between the first and second adjacent annular segments, wherein the first and second connector arms have substantially similar shapes, and wherein the first connector arm includes a first portion and the second connector arm includes a second portion, the first and second portions being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the stent. - View Dependent Claims (8)

9. A stent having a tubular body defining a longitudinal axis comprising:

a plurality of openings in the tubular body of the stent, the shape and orientation of each opening in the tubular body of the stent being the same; first, second and third annular segments, each annular segment defining a sinusoidal shape having a plurality of peaks and valleys, the second annular segment being positioned between the first and third annular segments and being 180°
out of phase with the first and third annular segments such that the peaks of the first annular segment extend toward the second annular segment and are aligned longitudinally with the valleys of the second annular segment and the peaks of the third annular segment; andfirst and second pluralities of bridge elements, each bridge element having a U-shaped portion between first and second connector arms, the first annular segment being connected to the second annular segment by the first plurality of bridge elements and the second annular segment being connected to the third annular segment by the second plurality of bridge elements, the first connector arm of each of the first plurality of bridge elements being connected between a peak and an adjacent valley of the first annular segment and the second connector arm of each of the first plurality of bridge elements being connected between a peak and an adjacent valley of the second annular segment, the first connector arm of each of the second plurality of bridge elements being connected between a peak and an adjacent valley of the second annular segment and the second connector arm of each of the second plurality of bridge elements being connected between a peak and an adjacent valley of the third annular segment, the first, second, and third annular segments and the first and second pluralities of bridge elements being connected in a configuration that forms some of the openings in the tubular body of the stent, wherein the plurality of bridge elements are connected in a manner such that the U-shaped portions of each bridge elements are oriented in the same direction, wherein a first connector arm of each bridge element of the first plurality of bridge elements is connected to the first annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape of the first segment and a second connector arm of each bridge element of the first plurality of bridge elements is connected to the second annular segment at a zero point of the sinusoidal shape of the second segment which is longitudinally aligned with the zero point at which the first connector arm of the same bridge element is connected, and wherein the first connector arm includes a first portion and the second connector arm includes a second portion, the first and second portions being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the stent. - View Dependent Claims (10)
