1. A method for changing the temperature of the body of a patient using a thermal exchange device comprising:

  • transferring heat between the body of the patient and the thermal exchange device at a first heat transfer rate by implanting a catheter into the body of the patient and circulating a heat exchange fluid with a pump in a heat exchange relationship between the catheter and a fluid bath;

    stopping the pump when a target temperature is reached and leaving the catheter in the patient;

    slewing the fluid bath;

    restarting the pump; and

    transferring heat between the body of the patient and the thermal exchange device at a second heat transfer rate.
