Abstract

The present invention is directed to a hemostatic wound dressing that utilizes a fibrous, fabric substrate made from carboxylic-oxidized cellulose and containing a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface, the fabric having flexibility, strength and porosity effective for use as a hemostat; and further having a porous, polymeric matrix substantially homogeneously distributed on the first and second surfaces and through the fabric, the porous, polymeric matrix being made of a biocompatible, water-soluble or water-swellable cellulose polymer, wherein prior to distribution of the polymeric matrix on and through the fabric, the fabric contains about 3 percent by weight or more of water-soluble oligosaccharides.

Claims

1. A process for making a wound dressing for use with moderate to severe bleeding, the wound dressing comprising a fabric substrate that comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose fibers and from about 8 to about to about 20 percent by weight of water-soluble oligosaccharides;

and a biocompatible, water-soluble or water-swellable polymer matrix of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, the process consisting of the steps of;

providing a solution having dissolved therein sodium carboxymethyl cellulose,

providing a fabric substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposing said first surface, said fabric substrate having flexibility, strength and porosity effective for use as a hemostat, said fabric substrate comprising a carboxylic-oxidized cellulose fibers and from about 8 to about 20 percent by weight of water-soluble oligosaccharides,

contacting said solution with said fabric substrate under conditions effective to substantially homogeneously distribute said solution on said first and second surfaces and through said fabric substrate,

lyophilizing said fabric substrate with said solution distributed there through, thereby forming a porous, polymeric matrix having a microporous structure.

2. The process of claim 1 wherein said fabric substrate comprises carboxylic-oxidized regenerated cellulose.

3. The process of claim 2 wherein said fabric substrate comprises from about 9 to about 12 percent by weight of said water-soluble oligosaccharides.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of said sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to said fabric substrate is from about 1:

5. The process of claim 2 wherein the weight ratio of said sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to said fabric substrate is from about 3:

6. The process of claim 1 wherein said fabric substrate comprises from about 3 to about 20 percent by weight of water.

7. The wound dressing of claim 2 wherein said fabric substrate comprises from about 7 to about 13 percent by weight of water.

8. A hemostatic wound dressing made in accordance with the process of claim 1.

9. The wound dressing of claim 8 wherein said fabric substrate comprises carboxylic-oxidized regenerated cellulose.

10. The wound dressing of claim 9 wherein said fabric substrate comprises from about 9 to about 12 percent by weight of said water-soluble oligosaccharides.

11. The wound dressing of claim 8 wherein the weight ratio of said sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to said fabric substrate is from about 1:

99 to about 20;
