1. A teat insert system for use in a teat of an animal comprising:
- a) a teat insert tube comprising proximal and distal ends, said proximal end comprising a retention member that retains the teat insert in the teat of an animal and said distal end comprising a valve attachment member, wherein said retention member comprises at least one flange that extends outwardly from said proximal end of said teat insert tube, wherein said at least one flange is retractable and extends to anchor said teat insert tube in said teat; and
b) a valve attachable to said valve attachment member, said valve movable between an open position where milk can be extracted from the animal and a closed position that seals off the teat of said animal.
