Abstract

The present invention relates to a polymeric implant, especially useful for dental medicine. More specifically, the present invention relates to a polymerizable device comprising an artificial tooth'"'"'s root and an abutment anchored therein and to a kit comprising interalia the same. The present invention also relates to a method for implanting the implant in the alveolar bore of previously extracted tooth.

Claims

1. A polymeric dental implant, configured to be implanted inside a bore created by a previous extraction of a tooth, said implant comprising:

a. an artificial root, comprising a non-shape-memory polymeric composition configured to be inserted in said bore, so said bore is substantially filled with said composition; and

b. an abutment comprising a proximal end, facing the oral cavity, having means to grip the structure of an implanted tooth; and

a distal end, efficiently anchored inside said polymeric composition; and

c. a multi-layer structure of more than one polymeric composition;

wherein at least one external layer is located adjacent to the bone and is substantially composed of elastic polymer, suitable for either local or systemic delivery of compounds selected from drugs and other substances; and

wherein at least one internal layer comprises relatively non-elastic, non-shape-memory and non biocompatible polymers, designed to effectively anchor the abutment.

2. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the at least one external layer comprises a non-memory expandable tubular polymeric member, produced by either knitting, weaving, press-molding, inflating or foaming of said polymeric composition.

The implant according to claim 1, wherein the at least one external layer is at least in part biodegradable, and is selected from poly-l-lactic acid, poly-d,l-lactic acid, poly-d,l-lactic acid, polyglycolic acid, polyglactin, polydioxanone, polyglyconate, polyurethane, blends and copolymers of any of the above.

4. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the at least one internal layer comprises acrylates.

5. The implant according to claim 4, wherein said acrylates are selected from metaacrylate, at least partly crosslinked acrylates, polymethyl metaacrylates and derivatives of any of the above.

The implant according to claim 4, wherein said acrylates additionally comprise additives, selected from hydroxyapatite, ceramics, fibrous materials, glass forming materials, phosphate salts, acrylates which were previously or partially polymerized, phosphate salts, and any other additive which may increase the mechanical stability of the implant, and combinations of any of the above.

7. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the compound or drug to be delivered is selected from one or more of biocides, steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, antiviral compounds, analgesics, local anesthetics, anticoagulants, antihypertensive substances, vitamins and contrast media.

The implant according to claim 7, wherein the biocide to be delivered is selected from cetylpyridinium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, polyoxyethylene, nonylphenols, alkylaryl sulfonates, miconazole nitrate, metronidazole, trimethoprim, chloramphenicol, sulfamethoxazole, cetramide, and any effective antibiotic.

9. The implant according to claim 7, wherein the steroidal anti-inflammatory agents to be delivered are selected from corticosteroids and any hydrocortisone-containing compositions.

10. The implant according to claim 7, wherein the local anesthetics or steroidal anti-inflammatory agents are selected from lidocaine, adrenaline, ephedrine, epinephrine, aminophylline, and theophylline.

11. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the abutment is efficiently anchored inside said polymeric composition by a mechanism selected from male or female threads, anchors and openings.

12. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the abutment comprises anchors selected from:

tilted wing members extending past an external diameter of said abutment;

sieve-like members; and

a gradually round construction in communication with said abutment.

13. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the abutment comprises a longitudinal axis, which is linear, kinked or concaved shape.

14. The implant according to claim 1, wherein said abutment is at least partially made of non-polymeric materials, selected from titanium alloys, Nitinol, iron ware, ceramic or any other composite materials.

15. The implant according to claim 1, wherein said abutment is at least partially filled with polymeric precursors, to be inserted into said bore.

16. The implant according to claim 1, wherein said bore is further configured to accommodate said polymeric implant by one or more of:

increasing said bore'"'"'s diameter for a wider, substantially round cut to be obtained;

shaping said cut for a non-round cut shape to be obtained; and

increasing said bore depth.

17. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the bore accommodating the implant has a non-even diameter along a longitudinal axis of said bore, such that a diameter of a distal end of said bore is substantially wider than a diameter of a proximal end of said bore.

18. The implant according to claim 1, wherein the bore accommodating the implant has either a non-even or irregular shape.

19. A kit for a polymeric dental implant comprising an artificial root, the kit comprising:

(i) a syringe capable of maintaining a non-shape-memory polymeric composition and injecting said polymeric composition into a bore created by a previous extraction of a tooth;

(ii) at least one polymeric composition to be injected into said bore; and

(iii) an abutment, designed as an open-bore pipe, in communication with said syringe and with said bore, wherein said abutment comprises a proximal end facing said bore, and comprises means to grip an implanted tooth, and a distal end, efficiently anchored inside said polymeric composition;

wherein said implant is configured to be implanted inside said bore; and

wherein the artificial root comprises said at least one polymeric composition, configured to be inserted in said bore, such that said bore is substantially filled with said at least one polymeric composition.

The kit according to claim 19, additionally comprising a polymeric sleeve, having one opening which is in communication with said abutment, configured to be inflated in said bore and to accept the injected polymeric composition, such that upon said injection, said sleeve is a barrier between said implanted tooth and the polymeric composition.

21. The kit according to claim 20, wherein said sleeve is selected from porous materials, woven materials, knitted materials, braided materials, and non-woven materials.

22. The kit according to claim 19, additionally comprising a healing cup.

23. A method for implanting a polymeric dental implant configured to be implanted inside a bore created by a previous extraction of a tooth, wherein the implant comprises:

a. an artificial root, comprising a non-shape-memory polymeric composition configured to be inserted in said bore, such that said bore is substantially filled with said composition; and

b. an abutment comprising a proximal end facing said bore and having means to grip the structure of an implanted tooth, and a distal end, efficiently anchored inside said polymeric composition;

the method comprising;

injecting at least a portion of a polymeric composition such that said composition is transferred from the syringe, via an abutment to said bore such that said bore and said abutment are substantially filled with said polymeric composition;

wherein said abutment is effectively anchored by its distal end in an internal layer of said polymeric composition; and

wherein the proximal end of said abutment is facing said bore.

24. The method for implanting a polymeric dental implant according to claim 23, the method comprising:

a. mounting said polymeric dental implant onto a balloon catheter;

b. introducing said balloon catheter into said bore;

c. inflating said balloon so as to expand the polymeric dental implant;

d. removing the balloon catheter such that the polymeric dental implant remains in an expanded state inside said bore, such that an external layer of the polymeric dental implant adjacent to said implanted tooth is provided; and

e. injecting at least a portion of the polymeric composition so the polymeric composition is transferred from the syringe, via the abutment to said bore, thus providing an internal polymeric layer;

wherein said abutment is anchored in its distal end in the internal polymeric layer of said composition; and

wherein the proximal end of said abutment is facing said bore.

25. The method for implanting the polymeric implant according to claim 23, additionally comprising more than one step of injecting, such that a multi-layer polymeric composition is provided.

26. The method according to claim 23, further comprising a first step of accommodating either a shape or a depth of said bore.

27. The method according to claim 23, wherein said accommodating is performed by drilling said bore such that a diameter of said bore adjacent to the distal end of the abutment is wider than a diameter of said bore adjacent to the proximal end of the abutment.
