1. A method of navigating on a portable display, the method comprising:

  • providing a navigation control operable to change a fixed and moveable viewable portion of a single page of information on the display from a first view to a second view, wherein;

    the single page of information includes more than one column of information, andthe navigation control includes at least one selectable column icon representing each column of information within the single page of information and each column icon representing a specific column position on the single page of information;

    actuating one of column icons, in response to operation of the navigation control to change the viewable portion of the single page of information on the display from the first view to the second view, wherein;

    the second view makes perceivable a column of information that is associated with the actuated column icon, andthe second view is outside of the viewable portion displayed in the first view;

    animating the display to create an appearance of motion as the viewable portion of the single page of information changes from the first view to the second view in response to the operation of the navigation control; and

    maintaining the relative positions of the columns of information within the single page of information as the viewable portion of the single page of information changes from the first view to the second view.
