1. A sensor array comprising:

  • at least two rigid bodies of predetermined lengths at predetermined intervals along a flexible substrate;

    at least two field-measuring sensors on each of said at least two rigid bodies responsive to two components of orientation within an external field of predetermined distribution of field strength and predetermined distribution of field orientation;

    said flexible substrate having a geometrical constraint restricting the rigid bodies to inter-body orientations of no more than two degrees of freedom and free from changes of orientations within said field about a field vector;

    said array determining the shape of the system from the lengths, intervals, and inter-body orientation angles, and the orientation of the system in an external coordinate system from the orientation of said at least two field-measuring sensors.
