1. A method to start an internal combustion engine, the method comprising:
- opening or maintaining open at least an intake valve of a cylinder in response to a request to start an internal combustion engine;
holding open said at least an intake valve through an exhaust or compression stroke of said cylinder;
closing said at least an intake valve during an intake or compression stroke of said cylinder;
adjusting opening timing of said at least an intake valve to a position after top-dead-center of the intake stroke of said cylinder; and
varying the opening timing of said at least an intake valve while said at least an intake valve opening time is after top-dead-center of the intake stroke of said cylinder.
