Abstract

A method for designing a drill bit that involves simulating a drill bit having cutting elements disposed thereon is provided. In particular, the method involves determining the axial forces acting on at least one of the cutting elements at a first orientation.

Claims

1. A method for designing a roller cone drill bit, comprising:

determining a position of a drive row on at least one cone, comprising;

simulating drilling the drill bit through an earth formation;

determining a rotation ratio of the cone; and

determining a position on the axis of the cone where the rotation ratio is substantially the same as a ratio of the distance of the drive row to the axis of the cone to the radius of the cone;

selecting an orientation for at least one cutting element based on the determined drive row position; and

outputting a roller cone drill bit design having the selected orientation.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein when the at least one culling element is inboard of the estimated drive row position, the at least one culling element has an orientation in the range of about 350 to 335 degrees.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein when the at least one cutting element is outboard of the estimated drive row position, the at least one cutting element has an orientation in the range of about 10 to 25 degrees.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the orientation of the at least one cutting element is selected based on the location of the at least one cutting element with respect to the estimated drive row position.
